CDC Director Condemns Trump's 'China Virus' Tweet

‘ABSOLUTELY WRONG’
Published Mar. 10, 2020 3:13PM ET

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday agreed that it was “absolutely wrong” for President Trump to label the 2019 novel coronavirus as the “China Virus.” “It’s absolutely wrong and inappropriate to call this the Chinese coronavirus, I assume you would agree with that?” Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL) reportedly asked CDC director Robert RedfieldCh

Several top GOP members and Trump allies have also used names associating China with the disease, such as Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who called it the “Wuhan virus” last week. Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), among several other Democrats, condemned Trump’s usage of the term: “Will stop spread of the coronavirus: washing your hands/staying home if you’re sick,” she said, adding, “Won’t stop the spread of coronavirus: racism/xenophobia.”

Robert Redfield has a LONG history of homophobia.

always some "Blame this population" name affixed to the flu du jour in those days.

I'm glad most of us have grown beyond that.

8. I think that was more an issue of laziness than name

Using the region of origin serves as a convenient way to name a virus for those who are too lazy to think about the connotations that the name may cause. Back in those days, I don't believe there was purposeful blame in names like the Asiatic Flu.

The virus causing the current pandemic has an official name though - SARS-CoV-2. Anybody who uses the term "China Virus" for the current pandemic deserves to be taken to task for it. It's impossible to know if Trump's use of that term stems from racist intent or an ultra-short attention span that makes him incapable of remembering even basic facts. God help us all.
