Gov. Inslee to restrict gatherings of more than 250 people, including sports and concerts

Source: The Seattle Times

Gov. Jay Inslee, in the most drastic move yet to try to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, is expected Wednesday to restrict gatherings of more than 250 people in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties, a move aimed at sporting events and concerts.

The measure will be announced during a Seattle news conference, according to a source involved in conversations with the governor’s office but who has not been cleared to discuss the issue. The measure would not affect retail stores, according to the source.

The restriction applies to large public gatherings such as baseball games, concerts and cultural events, another source told the Times.

Chris Reykdal, Washington’s superintendent of public instruction, said Tuesday evening he doesn’t expect Inslee’s announcement to shut down public schools.

In spite of it being obvious in the OP.

I swear, that sentence wasn’t there ten minutes ago. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it !

(thanks for the clarification).

I probably wouldn't have noticed myself except I moved to Washington a couple years ago...

No crowds at any NCAA games anywhere.

Honestly...only fair way to do it. Can’t have one bracket playing in an empty venue while the others have crowds...independent of if it’s a benefit or burden.

Going to be interesting to see if the really change venues. Word here is that the Dayton games may move to a smaller community college gym nearby.

Ohio gov (R) made a surprise announcement about limiting public gatherings. So now it looks like my MLB opening day is going to get hosed. But all for a good cause.

Ain’t we having fun now.

You have a keen insight into the future

Yeah, opening day is going to be a sad one for baseball fans. Weirdly, so many March Madness games (especially in the early rounds) get played at neutral sites in front of sparse crowds anyway, it may feel less weird - at least initially!

comparing Covid to the common flu, not to worry, heart disease kills more people, crap like that. I think corporate news will start to tow tRumps line in order to try to save their profits even though doctors, scientist are very alarmed by it & its mutation possibilities. They point to S Korea, which is showing a morbidity rate of .6%. What they aren't mentioning is SK has one of the most youngest populations in the world & covid hits the elderly worse. Countries with an older population like Italy & the US have and will be hit hard. Also, the flu usually doesn't destroy your lungs or cause systemic shutdown.

6. SK has a lower mortality rate because they have done far more testing than the US

Mortality rate is just a computation. Deaths divided by cases. If/when we catch up on testing, you'll see the mortality rate decline here in the US too. When the only tests you have are from already sick people, the mortality rate computes higher than it really is because the denominator is artificially low.

7. Taiwan, which was the first country outside of China to implement testing & covid containment

even more diligent than SK with testing still saw a morbidity rate of about 2.1% & has the same median age as SK so there are a lot of different contributing factors, I also think there are mutated strains at work.

About two months behind.

At this point only draconian measures will prevent us from being Italy in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Don't ban gathering of 250 people or more in certain counties.

BAN ALL GATHERINGS... EVERYWHERE. NOW.

CLOSE EVERYTHING.

It won't stop the spread, but it will slow it down a lot, hopefully long enough our hospitals can keep up with the serious cases.

Maybe long enough for a vaccine.

Math people... math. This isn't a medical care problem... This is an isolation and mitigation problem... use latex gloves, use rubbing alcohol, wash your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap, and stay away from people... any people.
