'I won't be canceling those plans': UW-Madison students still plan on traveling during spring break,
Source: Channel 3000
Chancellor Rebecca Blank issued a statement advising students, faculty and staff to not travel over spring break unless it's necessary due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
The statement also says that any student who travels should monitor themselves for 14 days after they return. Those who are traveling to a high risk area for the Coronavirus are asked to self-quarantine for two weeks upon return.
Many students said the warning sent out by Blank was too close to their spring break plans, giving students less than ample time to prepare or to heed to her warning.
"I haven't really thought about canceling it because I know that my mom has really been wanting to see me," said UW-Madison junior, Tyson Holtz. "I'm going to be going to Florida and that would be a shame if I weren't able to see my mom and have a break from studies."

many of the universities that have cancelled classes have their spring breaks this week, others have them next week or the week after next

(18,770 posts)Sure Tyler, you're young and when you get the coronavirus, you'll probably live. But, before you get sick, you're going to walk around FL and spread it like Johnny Applevirus (including to your mother).
That's the Tide Pod Generation for you right there...

(4,608 posts)One flew to Ft. Lauderdale.
The other is on a cruise to Cozumel.
Their parents are rightwingers, one step down from being full-on evangelicals, who arent taking the virus seriously.

(4,608 posts)Thank gawd. They go to a conservative mega church and are a very tight knit family. Ive been hoping my nieces and nephew expand their minds at college, once they are away from home and the church and have the opportunity to meet new people with differing views.

(13,776 posts)If they don't get a refund, that's a ton of money to lose. It's a different and less selfish calculation to roll the dice than it is to knowingly get on a cruise if they're sick.
And as nurses, they're going to get sick anyway when they come home and go back to work.

(12,548 posts)Why pay bloated administration & tuition costs, room & board, etc, if you can just do it from home?

(7,300 posts)College for most of us is exploring, partying, extracurricular school activities such as sports student government debate and so on. Not everything is about money although for some people it certainly is.

(12,548 posts)I've viewed them as a huge rip off for many people. The majority of the most successful people I know do not have degrees
If this makes some people decide to take on less debt & get a degree from home, more power to them. Or maybe choose a technical degree for a ton cheaper

Except for the flight.

(2,312 posts)This is the last week of classes, then next week is spring break. I am equipped to work from home after that, but my assistant isn't, and we have several student employees in my office who keep us running.
Of the students with whom I've spoken who are planning travel around the country and world, none are reconsidering their plans.

"Hours after Grinnell College canceled in-person classes for the remainder of the semester Tuesday, Iowa's Board of Regents called for the state's three public universities "to move as quickly as possible toward the ability to deliver instruction virtually."
The regents who oversee the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa State University in Ames and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls announced the move late Tuesday afternoon in response the outbreak of a novel coronavirus, which has infected thousands around the world, including eight in Iowa. The regents have not announced a set deadline for institutions to move to online instruction but have urged administrators to provide more information about their own timelines no later than Thursday morning.
"It is important for students, faculty and staff to prepare for this eventuality this week prior to spring break," the regents wrote in a Tuesday afternoon news release.
