New York officials traced more than 50 coronavirus cases back to one attorney

Source: CNN

The 50-year-old attorney, who works near Grand Central Station in Manhattan, tested positive for the virus on March 2 and was hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Cuomo said.

...snip...

Just two days after the man's positive results, on March 4, his 20-year-old son, a student at New York's Yeshiva University, also tested positive. School officials said he was showing symptoms of the virus.
The wife and 14-year-old daughter of the attorney both also tested positive on the same day.
So did the neighbor who drove him to the hospital.
And a friend of the attorney.
The friend's wife, two sons and daughter tested positive that day too.

I’m sure he didn’t mean it to happen but that quite a bit to carry.

it makes sense that his family got infected, it's all over their house probably--but it seems just being in proximity for a brief time is enough to infect, regardless of physical contact--caterers at a bar mitzvah he attended are sick. Did they touch his used silverware and glass? Unless the guy was just coughing his lungs out constantly wherever he was at, and never washed his hands at all, but still...Makes you think the CPAC and AIPAC gatherings would be producing some real numbers of infection by now.

I thought you couldn't get tested until you showed symptoms. I realize it was a good thing to test them so they can't spread it further. But I thought that was a hard and fast rule.

I've read lots of stories about people going to doctor after being exposed but doctor wouldn't test them. But this was New York, where they are willing to do the right thing.

Testing asymptotic cases sounds "effective" to me.

Even if there is a relatively high false negative rate, still need to test to catch as many as possible. If person tests negative, they still need to self-isolate and be monitored/retested.

This is where surveillance testing in "hot spots" could be very important. Even if a person has no known contact, identifying as many asymptomatic people as possible strikes me as very, very, important. These people can spread the virus and won't be self-quarantining because they feel fine. A risk that should be minimized.

They should look into his FL contacts too if they have not already done so....
