"Try getting it yourselves': Trump told governors they're responsible for getting their own medical equipment to treat coronavirus patients"
President Donald Trump told a group of governors on Monday that they should get vital equipment to treat coronavirus patients on their own.
"Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment - try getting it yourselves," Trump told the governors during a phone call, The New York Times reported. "We will be backing you, but try getting it yourselves. Points of sales, much better, much more direct if you can get it yourself."
"The Times reported that Trump's directive took some of the governors by surprise given that states are already working overtime to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus and are hoping for more federal aid. "Hospitals across the country are overwhelmed as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to skyrocket. "
"The Washington Post reported that health care workers are building triage tents outside emergency rooms, squeezing extra beds into break rooms and physical therapy gyms, and calling for delays in elective surgeries - or cancelling them altogether - as they grapple with the rapidly spreading disease. "
"The Times reported that Trump used most of his conference call with governors to paint a rosy picture of the disease, which contradicts everything scientists and public health experts have said. "

I think I heard on Katy Tur's show, that the federal govt has the responsibility, not the states. The states are already overwhelmed with other preparations, and this is something that should be handled on the federal level, and usually is. Is that correct? Also, That other countries were communicating between each other asking who has ventilators and if they do, they want to buy them, but not the United States? Seems very confusing.

(182,769 posts)Emergency procurements wipe out the normal rules of procurement. I work in that field.
POS (yeah that's the acronym) are usually credit card purchases at big boxes. To do that you still have to get clearance usually including a quote from a small business.
Emergency usually involves calamitous weather events or a roof collapse type thing.
As much as he screwed up he didn't want want to use the word Emergency.

(5,801 posts)a weak, ineffective Federal government and power transferred to the states. Except that some critical functions require a large, centralized response that can't be handled by states. Society is too large and interconnected now for their libertarian fantasy of a nation of independent pioneers to work.
But, the surviving koch and his ilk would rather let a bunch of peasants die than admit otherwise, or let the Federal government exercise appropriate authority. They want a weak response so that 'Muricans see failure at the Federal level.

(5,801 posts)upcoming bailouts for sundry industries, I doubt even the reddest states would go--the GOPee power structure in those states knows seceding would cut off the money supply. Hating on the Federal government is just for the rubes and to cripple taxation and regulation.
But, if some red states want to go, I wouldn't want to stop them.

(14,490 posts)it is not the Federal Government's responsibility to respond to national emergencies.
That would cost federal tax dollars and screw up their beloved tax giveaway for the wealthy.
Observing his recent responses and considering the way he responded to Puerto Rico, I feel that's his basic philosophy.
He was getting away with it until this disaster came along that the states cannot manage without massive federal help.
