White House preparing to promote malaria drugs on online platform to combat coronavirus: report

The White House is reportedly planning to promote the use of two malaria drugs frequently touted by President Trump as a potential treatment for coronavirus despite their unproven benefits, using a platform built by the tech firm Oracle.
The platform is slated to be used to collect information about off-label uses of the two drugs, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, the New York Times reported on Tuesday. The FDA is still reviewing both drugs effectiveness as a coronavirus treatment, and top public health officials have warned against jumping to conclusions on their effects.
Health and Human Services agencies such as the FDA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are part of the Oracle efforts, as is the presidents son-in-law Jared Kushner, the Times reported, citing two senior administration officials, who said the platform could be used to gather data from doctors who prescribe the drugs and track symptoms in patients.
Dr. David B. Agus, a professor of medicine and engineering at the University of Southern California, is also reported to be working with the White House and Oracle, and has repeatedly promoted the use of the drugs against the virus, saying on television recently the earlier you use them, the better.

Health officials within the administration have reportedly expressed dismay about Trumps promotion of bypassing standard clinical trials for the drugs as a coronavirus remedy.
On Monday, an Arizona man died while his wife was hospitalized at Banner Health after they both ingested chloroquine phosphate ... after seeing Trump tout its effectiveness.

This might or not pan out. I sincerely hope it does, although the drugs can have some pretty terrible side effects.
That orange asshole thinks he can take shortcuts and bypass medical science on information that will most likely turn out to be utterly bogus. This kind of recklessness is already killing people who are self medicating with pills left over from the service or arthritis treatment. Pushing this at this stage is beyond reckless, it is criminal.
I find it more likely that Avigan, an antiviral drug used against influenza in Japan, is an effective treatment, but this also needs to be investigated. There are trials in Japan.
Every article I've read on these old drugs used to treat Covid19 is chockablock full of weasel words.
The best idea is to avoid crowds, practice meticulous hygiene, and try not to catch this until studies have progressed to the point that doctors have a better idea of how to treat it. That's my plan, anyway.

I wonder if anything will ever wake the Republicans up to just how selfish and idiotic their leaders really are. I don't see them using whatever brain cells they have refused to use up until this point, though. They are too PROUD of being stubborn and stupid.

Now what does that do? It helps get zinc inside your cells. That's it.
It's the zinc that prevents the virus from taking over your cells.

(55,083 posts)First it was all a hoax, then it was going to go away, then warm weather would make it go away by spring, now an off-label use of a toxic medication will make it all go away.
Do you get the idea that Trump wants this to go away?
It's all about his reelection, obviously. Is Rand Paul taking it? Will Trump take it if he gets infected? Will Pence? Or does he like it because malaria rhymes with Melania? We don't know.
Foretell the future. When this doesn't work, what will he try next? Radiation? Nuke the virus? When the wave really hits, what will Trump do, or blame it on? Obamacare? BidenCare?
Millions may die from this gross negligence by this charlatan and quack. Faux Snooze is complicit. Allowing this nonsense to pass for medicine would put you or I or a pyramid scheme in jail.

(6,064 posts)Either it works and saves lives and he will take the credit, or it doesn't work, a few people suffer side effects or die, and he never mentions it again. It's a no risk bet for him.
Hydroxychloroquine is an approved drug with known safety and defined side effects . It's Trump's modus operandi to throw a lot of poop against the wall and see what sticks.
Moreover, there are good scientific reasons to think that hydroxychloroquine could work besides the early anecdotal reports/trials. It reduces inflammation and interferes with lysosomes, which could interfere with viral entry and exit into the cytoplasm (where it needs to get to make more virus) and blocks virus replication in cells grown on plates.

Im not going to take aquarium cleaner foolishlylike the man who overdosed, RIP. But if I were hospitalized, with poor prognosis, and no viable alternative for treatment, Id take it off-label. Its also cheap.
trump also mentioned the Gilead drug as a possibility. It hasnt been fleshed out, yet.

I wonder how many lives are going to be lost by people drinking aquarium cleaner instead of taking the safer alternative.
I guess technically those drinking the aquarium cleaner are the "proof' it works. I mean, being dead pretty much affirms they will never get the Covid virus. So, technically, it does work, in a very messed up way.
