Liberty University Brings Back Its Students, and Coronavirus, Too

Source: The New York Times

LYNCHBURG, Va. — As Liberty University’s spring break was drawing to a close this month, Jerry Falwell Jr., its president, spoke with the physician who runs Liberty’s student health service about the rampaging coronavirus.

“We’ve lost the ability to corral this thing,” Dr. Thomas W. Eppes Jr. said he told Mr. Falwell. But he did not urge him to close the school. “I just am not going to be so presumptuous as to say, ‘This is what you should do and this is what you shouldn’t do,’” Dr. Eppes said in an interview.

So Mr. Falwell — a staunch ally of President Trump and an influential voice in the evangelical world — reopened the university last week, igniting a firestorm, epidemiologically and otherwise. As of Friday, Dr. Eppes said, nearly a dozen Liberty students were sick with symptoms that suggest Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus. Three were referred to local hospital centers for testing. Another eight were told to self-isolate.

“Liberty will be notifying the community as deemed appropriate and required by law,” Mr. Falwell said in an interview on Sunday when confronted with the numbers. He added that any student returning now to campus would be required to self-quarantine for 14 days.

When the death toll soars, maybe we can discredit evangelical lunacy once and for all.

He was a preacher and the family very church-going Christians, of course. They had never experienced a violent thunderstorm with the great wind and buckets of blowing rain and flashes of lightning and thunder that rattled the windows. When one came through, they sat pale faced huddled on the couch while me and my children went out on the porch to watch it happen.
Some months later we heard that he had left the ministry and was selling insurance.

I'd never heard it before. I like how weird it is. I've never heard of a chocolate Jesus before, either. Is that a real thing? What do you do with it? Just eat it? Eating Jesus seems wrong. Well, unless he's in wafer form during communion. And you have to wash him down with his own blood, which tastes remarkably like red wine. Well, for Pentecostals his blood tastes like unfermented grape juice. They don't approve of alcohol and strain the interpretations of the Bible mightily anywhere it mentions wine, which it does a lot. Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine.

Plastic Jesus is a real thing. These days, you can find Him in bobblehead form. Plastic Madonnas and plastic saints are real, too. But no plastic Holy Ghosts.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred

‘This is what you should do and this is what you shouldn’t do,’”

This will be the words that define Eppes until the day he dies, the little toad.*

Did they kneel while praying? Maybe they didn't kneel enough.

Did they pray to the Lord Jesus or to Donald Trump? Sometimes conservatives have trouble keeping their gods straight.
