Ford, GE commit to making 50,000 ventilators in 100 days

Source: Columbus Dispatch

Ford Motor Company and GE Healthcare have announced plans to produce 50,000 ventilators in the next 100 days with the support of 500 United Auto Workers employees in Michigan to help in the battle against the coronavirus.

A new, simple ventilator design, licensed by GE Healthcare from Florida-based Airon Corp., operates on air pressure without the need for electricity, officials said during a conference call.

The two companies will “leverage” the design of Airon Corp.’s FDA-approved ventilator and work with UAW members to build the GE/Airon Model A-E ventilator, starting the week of April 20 at Ford’s Rawsonville Components Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan, said Jim Baumbick, vice president of enterprise product line management at Ford.

"January 3, 2020: The CDC is first alerted to a public health event in Wuhan, China (This fact was revealed publicly later by HHS Secretary Alex Azar.)

January 6, 2020: The CDC issues a travel notice for Wuhan due to the spreading coronavirus."

If that becomes an average daily death rate, another 70,000 people will die during those 100 days. Too little, too late.

What doctors are saying is they are having to keep people on ventilators longer than expected, as much as 30 days, thus not freeing ventilators for other patients. I think doctors are also anticipating many more people needing ventilators over the next couple of weeks, and they already know they do not have enough to handle what is coming. So I expect doctors will eventually have to make decisions about who lives and who dies.

isn't that nice, and hand them over to liar in chief to hold for his favorite repug governors?

'A senior military general says the Pentagon has not yet delivered any of the 2,000 ventilators it offered to the Department of Health and Human Services two weeks ago because HHS has asked it to wait while the agency determines where the devices should go.' https://to.pbs.org/3bKrhj5
