Healthy-looking people spread coronavirus, more studies say

A new study by researchers in Singapore estimated that around 10% of infections are sparked by people who were infected but not yet showing symptoms.
NEW YORK More evidence is emerging that coronavirus infections are being spread by people who have no clear symptoms, complicating efforts to gain control of the pandemic.
A study conducted by researchers in Singapore and published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wednesday is the latest to estimate that around 10% of new coronavirus infections may be sparked by people who were infected with the virus but not experiencing symptoms.
In response to recent studies, the CDC changed how it was defining the risk of infection for Americans. The agency's new guidance, also released Wednesday, targets people who have no symptoms but were exposed to persons with known or suspected infections. It essentially says that anyone may be a considered a carrier, whether they have symptoms or not.
That reinforces the importance of social distancing and other measures designed to stop the spread, experts said.

We need to randomly test samples of people in different areas who think they have not been exposed.

(45,404 posts)since they can't see the impact and think their social behavior is harmless. For example, I'm terrified of going to a grocery store right now so I'm avoiding it as long as I can. But then I hear about folks still meeting up with friends in their homes or for runs/walks thinking it's harmless since everyone feels healthy.
It's a difficult concept to believe you can spread it to a vulnerable person without even knowing that you have it. I'm an introvert but I can see a lot of extroverts struggling with social distance.

(35,293 posts)People are doing a lot of retconning. Or engaging in fantasy thinking.
Example: News report. CDC says that in mid-January they were still assessing. It wasn't clear until late January that it was a severe risk. Even then, the extent of person to person transmission wasn't clear.
Response: People knew this and predicted it in early January, before mid-January.
Their example: One research center, about the earliest, concluded on January 20 that this virus was a big deal.
Conclusion: Government doctor spokesperson was lying.
Please note that 1/20 is, apparently, before mid-January.
And they're still, as in this research, learning the extent of person-to-person transmission. So 4/1 is earlier than mid-January.
My favorite example was a newspaper saying that they spread the word in early January about the risk. The first mention in the newspaper (according to Lexus-Nexus) was in the mid 20s, around 1/25, and it called it the "Wuhan virus" (which they would now call irredeemably racist) and said that it was not something to be concerned about, that it posed low risk. Retconning.
My next favorite, for its sheer stupidity, was the claim that we knew all this four months ago and did nothing. That would have been late November.
CDC screwed up. FDA regulated. HHS regulated. The regulations got in the way. It's like the California city governments, saying that they want a bunch of regulations suspended because they're getting in the way. They esp. want sunshine laws/regs suspended for things involving the current epidemic. (Presumably so they don't get criticism or arguments. Which sounds familiar, to be honest.)

(12 posts)We have a long time to go before the peak time will arrive. The changes which are happening in society today may be lasting forever. I just hope we do NOT elect any more CLOWNS. Nixon, Reagan, Bush I & II and 45 were all republicans who only cared about "big business" and people are not on their agenda. This whole republican mental illness will not get better because republican people who they support or care about are not people. The big sickness affecting those cult member republicans who still support the republican party is type of mental sickness which does not have a pill to cure political retardation. Only exposure to the TRUTH with a capital "T" can help those who are republican cult members solve their mental problem.......
