Some Americans could wait 20 weeks to receive stimulus checks, IRS tells House Democrats

Source: CNN

By Manu Raju and Lauren Fox,

Washington (CNN)Americans likely won't begin to see direct payments from the coronavirus stimulus bill until at least April 13 and it could take 20 weeks for all the checks to be mailed, Trump administration officials told lawmakers, according to a House Democratic memo obtained by CNN.

The timeline means tens of millions of Americans will have to wait to get badly needed assistance, despite repeated suggestions from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin that the money would go out as soon as April 6. He said this past Sunday after passage of the $2.2 trillion stimulus bill that payments would not go out until mid-April.

CNN reported in March that former IRS officials said the wait would likely be weeks or months.

Initially, the IRS will make about 60 million payments, likely in the week of April 13, for taxpayers who provided their direct deposit information through their 2018 or 2019 tax returns, the memo from the House Ways and Means Committee says.

Now, that must have been a Democratic insistence, because that's not how the GOP works. The big dogs eat first, and maybe there will be some scraps leftover..

Then they'll start sending checks to the poorest people first, those with AGIs of $10K or less. So it's still in a person's best interest to get their tax return filed for 2019 WITH their banking information, even if they aren't getting a refund. People will still get a stimulus check even if they owe the IRS money. The only thing that can keep them from getting it is if they are behind on child support.

I owe every year so they don’t have my direct deposit info. Of course they could use the check to make a draft payment. Ha! I kid. I kid. That’d take organization and motivation that has been lacking these last 3 years.

First, there are people who got a refund for either 2018 or 2019 tax overpayments, who had that refund sent by direct deposit to a bank. They'll be fine.

Second, there are Social Security recipients who don't have enough income to file, and they will get their payment made to the same bank account that their Social Security gets deposited. I think they'll also be fine, but time will tell.

Third, there are people who owed money on 2018 and 2019 (if filed) federal tax filings, who sent the IRS a check. They're the ones who will have to wait, unless the government comes up with a system to have them submit direct deposit information. Generally, those are business people who want to pay the government as little as possible, as slowly as possible.

I guess there are some out there who prefer a refund check sent to them each year, in order to not let the IRS have an easy path to their bank accounts, sometimes wearing a tin-foil hat can cause problems.

I have a relative in that situation so I went looking to see if they just needed to file a simple tax return and there was a line on the home page about something coming soon.
