Fauci: 'I don't understand why' every state hasn't issued stay-at-home orders

Source: MSN

The nation's top infectious disease expert said Thursday he doesn't understand why every state hasn't issued stay-at-home orders as novel coronavirus cases continue to surge across the US.

"I don't understand why that's not happening," Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN's Anderson Cooper during CNN's coronavirus town hall.

More than 30 states and the District of Columbia have ordered their residents to stay at home. Fauci said governors that have held out thus far "really should" reconsider with the number of US cases passing 236,000 on Thursday and continuing to climb.

"You know, the tension between federally mandated versus states' rights to do what they want is something I don't want to get into," he said. "But if you look at what's going on in this country, I just don't understand why we're not doing that." Fauci's message appears to be at odds with President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said that he doesn't think a nationwide stay-at-home order is necessary, stressing the need for flexibility between different states.

If you look at the updated projections, Red States like Texas and Florida that have delayed stay at home measures are now expected to have more deaths than even California, which was among the first States to implement such measures even when cases were still relatively low.

Trump, Geogia's Governor Kemp, Texas's Governor, and Florida's Governor all dragged their feet. As a result more of their constituents will die even though they had far more notice than States like California.

Yup, WA has been able to flatten the curve. I think the President wanted to avoid the political heat by kicking the can to Governors, but then that put Red State Governors in a bind, since they did not want to stray from Trump's stance that a Nationwide shelter in place order was unnecessary. As a result, thousands more will die in Red States like Florida, Texas and Georgia. For example, Georgia is now expected to have three times more dead than Washington even though they are not too different in size, because Kemp wants to stay on Trump's good side. Florida is expected to have more dead than California even though CA is almost twice as big, because DeSantis wants to stick to Trump's talking points.

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/president-trump-bashes-inslee-as-nasty-person-during-coronavirus-briefing-says-he-wont-call-him/

President Donald Trump lashed out at Gov. Jay Inslee on Sunday, calling him “a nasty person” and “a failed presidential candidate” and said he won’t call him — but has not halted his top aides from aiding Washington state.

In a news conference at the White House, Trump was asked by a CNN reporter about comments last week in which he warned governors “to be appreciative” of the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and suggested Vice President Mike Pence, who is heading the response, shouldn’t take calls from state executives “that don’t treat you right.” Trump called the question dishonest, but he vented about Inslee.

“No, I don’t call the governor of Washington now. But Mike Pence calls, and the head of FEMA calls. I don’t stop them. Did I ever ask you to do anything negative, Mike, to Washington or the state of Washington?” he said, turning to Pence. “No, I don’t have to call because I am probably better off not, because we don’t get — he’s a failed presidential candidate, he is a nasty person. I don’t like the governor of Washington.”

The president said of those criticizing his administration’s coronavirus response, “When they disrespect me, they are disrespecting our government,” pointing to agencies such as the Army Corps of Engineers. “And you know what? I don’t mind If I am disrespected, but they can’t disrespect the Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA,” he said, before launching into a tirade about CNN as “fake news.”

8. Rush Limbaugh Floats Theory That Coronavirus Deaths Are Being Inflated to Push an Agenda

Before you know it, we will get Sandy Hook style truthers harassing families of folks who died because of the pandemic.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/rush-limbaugh-claims-governments-eager-to-blame-everyday-deaths-on-coronavirus

Conservative talk-radio host and recent Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree Rush Limbaugh on Thursday floated the theory that deaths from coronavirus have been inflated so that governments could further “the policies they have put in place.”

Citing the latest record-breaking unemployment claims numbers at the top of his radio show, Limbaugh groused that the 10 million jobless claims filed over the past two weeks aren’t “enough for people like Bill Gates” and others who “want to shut down the entire country.”

After referencing recent White House modeling projecting between 100,000 and 240,000 U.S. deaths if the country adheres to current social-distancing guidelines, the right-wing talker then cited an article written by a pathologist to bolster the claim that governments could be fudging their numbers.

“Now, folks, don’t misunderstand, look, I’m not trying to stir anything up here,” Limbaugh insisted. “There’s all kinds of people speculating about things out there. I’m just giving you facts.”

Look, if a National Lockdown was needed a MONTH AGO, Fauci should have been SHOUTING from ROOFTOPS in necessary a NATIONAL LOCKDOWN NEEDED NOW -- damnit!

So tired of the piece milling!!

*We NEED a National Lockdown NOW!!!
*We NEED EXTREME Social Distancing ENFORCED NOW!!!
*We NEED EVERYONE to COVER their MOUTH and NOSE - NOW - wherever they are outside -- unless they are in their backyard with NO ONE ELSE. NO ONE!!!

It is time to level up with the American People. Read INTERNATIONAL News Resources as the American Press is STILL behind the 8-Ball and so is:

*The CDC
*Your Local Health Department
*Most State Governments

Why? Because all of the above departments are NOT telling folks what they need to know. The PIECE MILLING MUST STOP NOW!!! Americans are DYING!!!

I don't believe or trust traitor White House, traitor cdc, traitor advice. I plugged into WHO 3 weeks ago and that's where I get my covid-19 information.

Washington, and a lot of media care about the economy, instead of stopping this horror and finding a medical path to conquer it. If they want to go shopping, then they can go into the stores first. If they want to cancel the at home guidelines, they can go first.

I haven't been in a store since 3/13, and I have no interest in going until after the curve is flattened. I would be willing to stay home until I can go to a doctor and get a new, approved vaccine. I do not want to get covid-19 and survive with dreadfully impaired lungs, and I do not want to die from it. My grand kids will graduate from high school in a few years and I want to be here for their milestones.

The problem, of course, is that such a stance can't last. Once the pile of dead bodies gets high enough, even they will have to knuckle under and, using some "face-saving" cockeyed pretext (i.e. DeSantis, Kemp, etc.,) they will have to do it (a state-wide stay-at-home) lest their constituents drag their lifeless body from the state house and string it up on a nearby lamp post.

Unfortunately, their states will end up with a far higher mortality rate than it would have otherwise been because of their infidelity to their states' citizens.

had its stay at home order starting on March 24.

Now, it may have covered all the areas currently with rapidly increasing COVID cases, but people (a) ignore that and (b) pretend that there were no such orders.

Even then, the local stay-home orders were after a tussle between county/state government, because the local governments did not want to make that decision and bear that responsibility. They wanted somebody else to issue a stay at home order for counties with no COVID cases or hospitalizations because otherwise it just wasn't fair. (And they complained about it to the media, too--it should be everywhere if their population's affected.)

By that time, though, things had pretty much quieted down. Schools were closed and a lot of places that could have employees work at home had shifted.

So when you say "delayed stay at home" remember--most of TX was locked down before places like Virginia issued their order (without local restrictions because it was a state function, not county function). And when you look at TX, you see a really stark urban/rural divide. Was showing my kid the map for TX and pointed out that Dallas/FTW was the biggest hotspot, and you could follow the interstate down through Austin and San Antonio. Houston is #2, but still fairly isolated. College Station, home of Texas A&M, between Austin and Houston, is punching above its weight.

The more granular your data, the clearer the picture. It's the same with actual graphic reproductions--the greater the pixels, the crisper the boundaries with objects. And if you apply a red or blue filter, or a polarizing filter, you immediately remove a lot of data. That can be good for filtering out random noise--but it can also filter out useful data if its used indiscriminately.

21. After Refusing to Call His Action a 'Stay at Home Order,' Gov. Greg Abbott a Video to Clarify
Fri Apr 3, 2020, 12:48 PM
Apr 2020

I thought the Governor until recently was refusing to issue a stay at home order and was creating confusion by calling what he was ordering anything but a stay at home order.

https://www.sacurrent.com/the-daily/archives/2020/04/02/after-refusing-to-call-his-action-a-stay-at-home-order-gov-greg-abbott-issues-a-video-to-clarify

After handing down an executive action Tuesday rife with verbal gymnastics to avoid being called a "stay-at-home order," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has since posted an online video trying to explain exactly what he meant.

In the clip posted lated Wednesday afternoon, Abbott displays the document on his desk and explains that it "requires all Texans to stay at home." That's the best way, he adds, to lower the rate of COVID-19 infections.

“Now, I know this is a great sacrifice, but we must respond to this challenge with strength and with resolve," the Republican governor says before signing off with a "God bless you all."

Here's the problem: Abbott dug in his heels at calling his original mandate a "stay-at-home order," rejecting language used by other states and municipalities — including San Antonio — to describe similar strategies.
