Sailors cheer Navy captain who was removed after pleading for help with coronavirus outbreak
BY ALICIA COHN - 04/03/20 08:49 AM EDT
Sailors on the USS Theodore Roosevelt cheered for their departing captain Thursday night as he was removed from duty.
Videos captured on social media and sites like Stars and Stripes show sailors shouting "Captain Crozier" for Capt. Brett Crozier as he left the ship.

Crozier was removed from duty after a letter he wrote pleading for help for those onboard his ship who are infected with the coronavirus leaked to the media.
The Navy announced his removal on Thursday. According to Navy Secretary Thomas Modly, whether Crozier intentionally leaked the letter or not, he "did not take care" to ensure it was not leaked.

When I was in boot camp we were told if Enterprise left SF under Golden Gate and went to sea and turned around and came back - a death was not an unexpected thing.

(18,770 posts)*Acting* SecNav Modly claims Capt Crozier could've called him personally. I'm very sure Capt Crozier exhausted every avenue (including calling the Pentagon) before he wrote his letter.
I smell bullshit on Modly's part.

(18,770 posts)There's no way Capt Crozier had options beyond having to do what he did. By all accounts, he's a consummate Naval officer. It was clear any other channels were exhausted if he resorted to going public with it.

(57,081 posts)I've cannot believe how big that boat is, almost 5,000 on the crew. If the Pentagon is really worried about a nuclear powered vessel with nuclear weapons and however many aircraft, they could have had hazmatted Marines providing security.
One of their alleged concerns was that he let the rest of the world know about how undermanned the carrier was going to be in the coming weeks. Hoooey. Any intelligence service already knows what the crew ate for breakfast. And at any rate the rest of the world is suffering to different degrees what that crew was going through.
One of the things that seems trivial to those on the beach is what we salts know: that 'boat' is all we have. We can't let it slip out from underneath us. Its our earth and our nation. Not being up to an E rating is a bug in our throats. No one would want to have another crew relieve us, let alone the fact that literally there are not very many people on the planet that could or would be able to take the ship or its weapons away from us, full compliment of sailors or not.
This guy is being mothballed because he didn't keep his situation under his hat to "prevent panic" (did you see Donnie Two Scoops claim he wasn't ignorant of Trumpvirus, he was trying to prevent panic which if he wanted to, he could create panic better than anyone else in the world?), thinking my son or daughter was on the crew and the Navy was sitting on a bad situation might make me panic. In a bad situation a leader ALWAYS lets his crew in on what they're facing and communicates with Washington, too; and Washington STAYS in contact with the crew and the public.
That's what really bothers me, the situation on board could be the same for any number of causes and there is NO contingency or protocol for it. Unfucking believable and not indicative of the time I spent in blue in the early 70's; and we Viet era white caps were an unruly lot.
The SecNav needs to get all his shit into one sock.

(2,900 posts)There is a very strict chain of command protocol involved in airing of grievances in the military.
Very like all the way up he was assured that all is well... while Croizer knew first hand; that all is not well...
Its infuriating to see career brass personnel pushed out of the way like this under these circumstances.

Yet another important position NOT FILLED by IQ45 - his way of dodging Congressional or formal approval of candidates nominated for crucial positions of leadership of our country.
Then again, why should we expect "qualified" people in those positions since we have the least qualified person EVER living in our White House?

(17,863 posts)I am sure he is just thrilled about the prospect. The XO, who also has the rank of Captain, is in temporary command.
I got to think the Admiral who was this Captain's boss should probably be thinking about his next career. He sat on the same ship with Crozier. To be a fly in the room when those two discussed ship readiness.

(16,079 posts)It was probably his idea. As soon as he read about, he had Esper get off his knees and order Modly to relive Captain Crozier.
While those empty suits in the CNO's office didn't have the courage to stand up and protect a fellow sailor...who did what he was supposed to do!
These days a good portion of the Pentagon brass are nothing more then civilians in camouflage, or wearing jackets with colored ribbons, but lacking in any form of leadership.

(17,863 posts)You can't have a multi-party unsecured email regarding crew fitness on an aircraft carrier. The thing I want to know is what Crozier did before he took such a desperate action. He had to know his Navy career would be over.

He makes a point of insulting military members at least several times a year.
It's telling that the only military person he has actively venerated was the war criminal who the military itself judged to be dishonorable.
The list of Trump's contempt for the military is long, from his campaign disrespect of John McCain, through his insults of the widow of the green beret killed in Africa, his insults of Matthis after the resignation. On and on.
It's the one institution in American life that Trump thinks he might have trouble undermining, so he attacks it constantly. He's a pig.

Theodore Roosevelt Strike Group Completes Port Visit to Da Nang to Commemorate 25 Years of Diplomatic Relations
March 12, 2020
DA NANG, Vietnam -- USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) successfully completed a scheduled five-day port visit to Da Nang, Vietnam on March 9. The visit, which commemorated 25 years of U.S.-Vietnam diplomatic relations, followed the historic 2018 visit of USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), demonstrated the strong U.S. commitment to its comprehensive partnership with Vietnam and to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
We are honored to receive such a wonderful and warm welcome from the people of Vietnam, said Adm. Aquilino in a March 6 telephone briefing with journalists. This port call highlights our continued cooperation and strong support for Vietnam
Our commitment to each other, including this weeks visit, will help ensure a stable, predictable, and durable relationship based on mutual interests, values, and trust.
