Navy Captain Removed From Carrier Tests Positive for Covid-19
Source: NY Times
Capt. Brett E. Crozier, the Navy captain who was removed from command of the coronavirus-stricken aircraft carrier U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, has tested positive for Covid-19, according to two Naval Academy classmates of Croziers who are close to him and his family.
The commander began exhibiting symptoms before he was removed from the warship on Thursday, two of his classmates said. Crozier was fired following a leak to The San Francisco Chronicle of a letter he had emailed to Navy leaders that detailed the failures on the services part to provide the necessary resources to swiftly move sailors off the carrier and disinfect areas on board as the virus spread through the ship.
Thomas B. Modly, the acting secretary of the Navy, said he had lost confidence in Croziers ability to command the ship effectively as it dealt with the evolving crisis after Crozier sent the letter on an unclassified email system to 20 to 30 people. Sending such a letter, Modly said, caused unnecessary alarm about the operational readiness of the ship and undermined the chain of command. In sending it out pretty broadly, he did not take care to ensure that it couldnt be leaked, Modly said. And thats part of his responsibility.
In a briefing Saturday, President Trump offered support for Modlys decision. He shouldnt be talking that way in a letter, the president said of Crozier. I thought it was terrible what he did.

I will hold him in my heart and send all of healing vibes I can find to send to this very special commander who has given a lifetime of service to his country.
Be well Captain Crozier.

(9,958 posts)First of all, it would send a message to his supporters that this virus is serious and maybe they would start self-quarantining and stop spreading germs through church services and other social gatherings. Secondly, it might finally register with Trump that we need scientists and epidemiologists, not his BS propaganda shows. And, third, it would get him off his propaganda shows for at least a few days and give the country a rest from listening to the drivel he spouts and instead listening to the scientists.

(9,426 posts)I wonder how many more of the crew will test positive, since the response is slow in coming? This man has an exemplary resume, a terrific education, lots of commendations. In other words, a tribute to the service. The failure in the WH is not fit to shine his shoes. How many careers has the failure-in-chief ruined so far?

Who kind of monster would have dreamed of putting power in the hands of the most vicious man on earth?
Capt. Brett Crozier has steadfast admirers across the nation. He will be remembered with greatest respect.

(3,991 posts)I get why he sent this out broadly, so it couldnt be squelched by a simple direct superior officer. He could see the time factor, sense the rate of spread, see the inability to protect oneself. A burying of the letter for even a week could have meant the difference of a multi factor increase in infections. By sounding the alarm, he forced the public into the debate, and one they were probably going to lose considering how cruise ships (which are easier to self quarantine on) were forced to keep passengers on board. He probably prevented dozens of infections... probably some lives as well...

Crozier blew the whistle and it shit trashed his career because he did not want the young men on his aircraft carrier to become infected with the wretched Coronavirus.
We can only hope Crozier is strong enough to fight Covid off and fully recover.
Damn sending the angels to the gallows,.. wtf.

(6,831 posts)I'm going to puke. That "chain" to which they refer is made up of people, each "link" in the chain is another human being, making the best possible decisions they can given the circumstances under which they are operating. As you ascend the links, the choices become more complex. As a retired Sailor, I get all of this and why it matters.
During times of normal activity, the Chain of Command sends a strong message to all that there are rules to be followed and under which circumstances they are invoked. But we sailed out of normal waters a long time ago.
COVID-19 is new territory for all of us, even NAVY ships at sea. Now, I hear that Moldy is saying that Captain Crozier "panicked." Of his 4800 crew members, 25% of them were off loaded and are now in health care facilities. If 25% of YOUR workforce were ill, you'd be moving heaven and earth to get them the care they need.
Then we were treated to "Empty Suit" Esper said that they had "only 155" confirmed cases. Well, once everyone gets tested, those numbers are going to increase.
I find it unacceptable, intolerable and unconscionable that all of the people making these determinations do not have one medical license among them. This is not a management training run amok. It is a medical pandemic and we have fried dick sandwiches running the operation, not the medical experts.
I do say this. I sleep a bit easier at night now knowing that that orange pustule has lost any possible chance of winning re-election. He will be lucky to escape prison. But I do think he should be deported. In one of his own Space Force vehicles.
I do salute Captain Brett Crozier for his actions. I would be proud to serve with him any day.
BRAVO ZULU, Captain Crozier, BRAVO ZULU.

(6,457 posts)I don't like the idea of a nuclear warship being crewed by sailors with potential disabilities and nothing to help them prevent the spread of this deadly virus. I think that anyone who allowed this to happen isn't doing his job.
Protecting our fighting men and women should be a no brainer. But, anyone that makes Trump look like the dolt that he is is punished severely. We've seen it before, and we will see it again.
How demoralized those sailors must be now. The new captain will probably get sick, too. He shouldn't have run his mouth to the entire crew, but it smacks of directives from Trump. Now, the new captain could have given them an inspirational rah-rah speech, but he chose to flap his lips against the departing Captain, which to me is a breach of military etiquette.
As CiC, Trump definitely has a duty to maintain our military. Despite the leak to the paper, why is the ship in so much trouble to begin with? Why should any Captain have to beg for help with a frickin' plague on board, which his sailors are catching?
Trump is incompetent. And, he turned his responsibility over to Pence and Jared.
Impeachment No. 2 is recommended. When this is over, and Trump is ousted, we will have quite a number of brave heroes to thank for doing their duty.
