Nursing home presuming all 800 patients, staff have COVID-19

Source: CBS News

Beaver County, Pennsylvania — A Beaver County nursing home is operating under the presumption that all of its 800 patients and staff members have COVID-19, reports CBS Pittsburgh. The Brighton Rehabiliation & Wellness Center, northwest of the city, says they'll all be treated as such.

Over the weekend, a union representative from the nursing home reported at least 42 of the 450 patients living there had tested positive and three had died.

The union says 10 of the more than 300 workers have tested positive.

Last night, the nursing home spoke with the Department of Health and it was decided test results would no longer be considered. Instead, anyone showing symptoms will be isolated and aggressively treated. It's thought that will better protect others from asymptomatic cases.

The party's on at the nursing home!

Of course, if only 10% of patients and 3% of staff have the disease, may the party's not quite appropriate. It might be a good idea to not assume all are infected.

Everyone is presumed to be infected, and treated accordingly.

So you (or anyone outside -- me) is protected.

Now, if you are on the inside, you are screwed.

It's a cold, but standard, assumption. 102 years ago there was a lock down of Chinatown in San Fransisco the same way -- everyone inside was "presumed" infected. (I think this was the plague, but can't recall.)

my county and about 10 miles from where I live. There is nothing nefarious about what's happening. No one is trying to hide anything. While the residents live there, the staff goes to homes all over the county when their shift is done. It's a smart move to presume everyone has been infected and treat them accordingly rather than risk spreading cv19 all around the county when it's now fairly isolated at the nursing home.

A bit of history on the facility. Up until about 5 years ago, it was owned by the county, called locally the "county home", and was, more-or-less, the last resort for people who had no other options for care. It never made money for the county and the county commissioners decided to sell it. A group based in NY bought it and kept it as nursing home and rehab facility. They have put a good bit of money into upgrades starting with the rehab wing that is seperate from, but attached to, the main building. It's a huge building, 4 or 5 stories and lots of beds, around 500 or more, but it's old and badly in need of upgrades and modernization. The staff is unionized (SEIU) and they've been working with the ownership so employees could return to work safely. It's just an unfortunate situation all around right now, but there are no other cv-19 cases being reported at any other nursing home or assisted living facility in the county. These residences were locked down (no outside visitors allowed) early on by Gov Wolf, but Brighton Wellness is so big with such a large staff from all over the county, it was probably inevitable that something like this would happen.

but wouldn't it be better if we actually tested everyone so that we didn't have to presume?

by larger infection numbers.

Clearly it's not a "hoax" and never was, even if there is not one more case counted.

not to test to keep the numbers low. Numbers are all that matters to him. He doesn't give a shit if people get the virus as long as they aren't counted. He doesn't give a shit if people die from the virus as long as they are not counted.

This sick approach is going to keep this virus going on for a very long time. They can compare charts between us and Italy all they want but Italy tested. Trump brags that he has tested 1.6 million people, more than anyone else in the world, 1.6 million equals 0.5% of our population.

Many people there are helpless to protect themselves and are at the mercy of someone else's protective measures.
