Cuba promotes homeopathy as effective 'weapon' against the coronavirus
Source: The Miami Herald
As scientists around the world speed up clinical trials to find a cure or vaccine for the coronavirus, the Cuban government will begin distributing a homeopathic remedy to the elderly and other vulnerable people to prevent the spread of the disease, a top health official said.
Dr. Francisco Durán, national director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health, said in a press conference on Sunday that sublingual drops of the compound PrevengHo-Vir prevent different diseases such as influenza, the common cold, dengue, and emerging viral infections such as this one.
On Monday, Durán tried to correct his statements and said that the product does not prevent contagion but rather increases resistance, the bodys defenses against a certain virus.
Several state media outlets reported that PrevengHo-Vir is already being used in various Cuban provinces to treat the elderly and other groups vulnerable to the coronavirus. There is no internet record of PrevengHo-Vir, other than press reports about the announcement of its distribution in Cuba.

People recover most probably due to a random antibody that is produced. It a know fact that some antibodies are produced in the body without any stimulus and happen to be present when an unknown antigen is contracted. It is totally random, but actually a "miracle" that leads to the development and antibodies for those of us who happened not to be "blessed" with this automatic response. (8,703 posts)The drug, called Interferon Alpha-2B Recombinant (IFNrec), is jointly developed by scientists from Cuba and China
Despite hefty US sanctions inflicted on it for more than half a century, Cuba has mobilized its medical corps around the world to distribute a new wonder drug that officials there say is capable of treating the new coronavirus, Newsweek reported.
The drug, called Interferon Alpha-2B Recombinant (IFNrec), is jointly developed by scientists from Cuba and China, the report said.
Already active in China since January, the Cuban Medical Brigades began deploying to dozens of nations, providing personnel and products such as its new anti-viral drug to battle the disease that has exceeded 400,000 confirmed cases across the globe, the report said.
Cuba first used advanced interferon techniques to treat dengue fever in the 1980s and later found success in using it to combat HIV, human papillomavirus, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and other diseases, the report said.

(29,237 posts)Certainly theres great value to peer reviewed studies, but they are no gold standard of truth and replicability.
According to a survey published in the journal Nature last summer, more than 70% of researchers have tried and failed to reproduce another scientist's experiments.
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-39054778
In a similar vein, the absence of peer reviewed studies does not prove lack of efficacy of a non-allopathic form of medicine. And that even those purportedly disproving its efficacy could be wrong.
Sometimes folk remedies actually work. And especially when theres nothing available in the allopathic dispensary thats effective, might as well use complementary options, as long as theyre safe.

Quick example: my mother had a mild case of flu several years ago, and my brother, an experienced and board certified MD, was at the house along with me. She was suddenly almost overcome by intense nausea at one point, and he had no idea what to do without anti-nausea medicine on hand. I quickly boiled some water and grated some fresh ginger into it, and the nausea passed very quickly after she started drinking it. He was more than a little surprised.
Natural healing is not taught in medical school. Preventive nutrition is only briefly touched on for diabetes and heart disease, just the basic stuff... everything else is oriented around pharma and surgery.
Integrative, also called functional, medicine, brings in the wisdom of non pharma based wellness, but those doctors are few and far between.

Some Cubans have been on this vaccine therapy for lung cancer more than 10 years, needing a shot only about every 3 months. The ability for the US and Cuba to share this cancer fighting research was loosened under Obama and then totally blocked by Trump. I am sure the US pharmas want to keep it blocked so that they can continue to "offer" their cancer remedies for profit. The PBS show highlighted some Americans who travel to Cuba for treatment with the vaccine. It was very enlightening. I did not know that when Castro took over he declared that free health care was a right and that free education was a right and that these two principles were the basis of his administration. He said that medical students are now involved in a massive screening campaign at the community level, going door to door and asking about family members or neighbors who have respiratory symptoms.
Yesterday, alone, more than one million people were interviewed in their homes, as part of this campaign. The medical students came in contact with those persons, but they did so with strict observance of the safety measures and protocols, in which they were previously trained, he said.
Its a massive campaign, organized by health services at the community level.

It seems crazy, but after weeks talking about all over the Cuban Interferon Alfa2B, a medicine that the Venezuelan top dog Nicolás Maduro came to advertise among his people as "the cure against the coronavirus", the turn has now touched two other medicines Cubans: Anamú and PrevengHo®Vir.
Pay no attention to the names - ugly, by the way - but to their effects. These days the Cuban state - although it had two months to do it - is on the run giving its elders PrevengHo®Vir a troche y moche; Now, they are also betting on Anamú, but if you ask Cubans on the street what is one thing and what is the other, you may not even know, because both names have come to the fore in the last few hours as "remedies". against COVID-19 itself, but against respiratory diseases.

since they launched a terror campaign against the old publisher, David Lawrence, who left, imagine that! At one point he and his wife both were having people check their cars for them before starting them every day, due to car bomb anxiety, car bombings being a big item in Miami against political enemies of the violent right-wing reactionaries. At one point the FBI named Miami "America's Terror Capital."
Here's an old article discussing how the Miami Mafia went about getting control over the Miami Herald:
TRYING TO SET
THE AGENDA IN MIAMI
Bashing the Herald is only part of Jose Mas Canosa's strategy
by Anne-Marie O'Connor
O'Connor, who is based in Miami, is Latin America and Caribbean correspondent for Cox Newspapers.
The Miami Herald usually takes and assumes the same positions as the Cuban government. But we must confess that they were once more discreet about it. Lately the distance between The Miami Herald and Fidel Castro has narrowed considerably. . . . Why must we consent to The Miami Herald and ElNuevo Herald continuing a destructive campaign full of hatred for the Cuban xile, when ultimately they live and eat, economically speaking, on our support?
Jorge Mas Canosa, chairman of the Miami-based Cuban American National Foundation, in a local radio broadcast, aired on January 21 and printed in full in El Diario las Americas.
The revelation that The Miami Herald and its Spanish-language counterpart, El Nuevo Herald, were in bed with Cuban leader Fidel Castro must have confounded the editors of the Cuban Communist party organ, Granma, since the Havana daily has repeatedly portrayed them as right-wing tools of the eternal CIA campaign against the thirty-three-year-old revolution.
Anywhere else, Mas Canosa's remarks might have been ignored. In the darker recesses of Miami's exile community, however, his words were clearly a call to arms. Within days Herald publisher David Lawrence, Jr., and two top editors received death threats. Anonymous callers phoned in bomb threats and Herald vending machines were jammed with gum and smeared with feces. Mas Canosa's Cuban American National Foundation quickly denied responsibility and condemned the hijinks, but Mas's words were highly inflammatory in a city where public red-baiting has served as a prelude to bombings and, in past years, murder.
That was in January, but editors at the Herald still feel besieged. Foundations ads saying "I don't believe The Herald" in Spanish are appearing on Dade County buses. Lawrence has heard that foundation people are sounding out advertisers over whether they would support a boycott -- a troubling prospect in a recession.
Coverage of the foundation and Cuba is now carefully scrutinized, Herald reports say. "There has been a watershed in how we operate with Cuban questions," says one staffer, who requested anonymity. "Before the campaign, Cuba issues were dealt with in a routine way."

THREATS AT THE HERALD
By Howard Kurtz
February 4, 1992
A long-running dispute between the Miami Herald and a Cuban exile leader has taken a nasty turn in recent days, with the newspaper's top executives receiving written death threats in both English and Spanish.
Tensions have escalated in the past two weeks after Jorge Mas Canosa, chairman of a lobbying group called the Cuban American National Foundation, denounced the Herald on Spanish-language radio. Publisher David Lawrence Jr. accused him in print of trying to "destroy" the paper.
The Herald also received a telephoned bomb threat last week, and dozens of its vending machines have been vandalized, nine of them with feces placed in the coin slots.
"I don't think I can take it lightly," said Lawrence, one of those who received the death threats. But he said, "We will not be intimidated from telling the truth."
Francisco Hernandez, the group's president, said yesterday that "the foundation condemns any threat, any resort to vandalism. This is not the way of the Cuban American community. We believe this is a conflict of ideas."
Mas's group has accused the Herald of siding with Fidel Castro. Mas had a lengthy letter of complaint hand-delivered to Lawrence Saturday. Lawrence questioned Mas's motivation, saying that shortly after he received the letter a Wall Street Journal reporter, Jose de Cordoba, called to ask him about it. The Journal reported on the controversy yesterday.
In the letter, published in Sunday's Herald, Mas accused the paper of "a marked insensitivity to the Cuban American community. ... It is ironic for you to accuse us of promoting hate when we have led the fight for peace and reason. ...
"For over two years, your paper tried to discredit my good name. ... The Herald does not report facts or news. It reports gossip, innuendo and hearsay."
In an accompanying column, Lawrence replied that "when you make wild and angry accusations, like some of this 'pro-Castro' garbage, you stir up the less well-intentioned and the more misguided." Blanketing New Hampshire For the most voluminous coverage of the New Hampshire primary, the envelope, please. The winner is ... the Boston Globe!

~ ~ ~
Since the all-out war and all the bomb-threats, etc., etc., etc. from the radical right-wing reactionary first wave of "exiles" from Cuba invaded Miami and overthrew any and all local objective journalism there, there will be NO legitimate information delivered from their local propaganda outlet until that wave, and their progeny, raised on their tall tales about Cuba have died. Each successive generation is becoming more progressive, and one day they may be honest in how they deal with real information.
As Jorge Mas Canosa had his people post all over town, and on the buses, etc., "I do not believe the Herald." That was because the Herald had sinned by printing something Mas Canosa didn't approve. Since he scared David Lawrence out of town, the Herald has NEVER printed any truthful article concerning Cuba since.
The Herald panders specifically to the Cuban "exiles" and the Venezuela right-wing "exiles."

From Ebola to earthquakes, Havanas doctors have saved millions. Obama must lift this embargo
@seumasmilne
Wed 3 Dec 2014 15.07 EST
Four months into the internationally declared Ebola emergency that has devastated west Africa, Cuba leads the world in direct medical support to fight the epidemic. The US and Britain have sent thousands of troops and, along with other countries, promised aid most of which has yet to materialise. But, as the World Health Organisation has insisted, whats most urgently needed are health workers. The Caribbean island, with a population of just 11m and official per capita income of $6,000 (£3,824), answered that call before it was made. It was first on the Ebola frontline and has sent the largest contingent of doctors and nurses 256 are already in the field, with another 200 volunteers on their way.
While western media interest has faded with the receding threat of global infection, hundreds of British health service workers have volunteered to join them. The first 30 arrived in Sierra Leone last week, while troops have been building clinics. But the Cuban doctors have been on the ground in force since October and are there for the long haul.
. . .
But its not the first time that Cuba has provided the lions share of medical relief following a humanitarian disaster. Four years ago, after the devastating earthquake in impoverished Haiti, Cuba sent the largest medical contingent and cared for 40% of the victims. In the aftermath of the Kashmir earthquake of 2005, Cuba sent 2,400 medical workers to Pakistan and treated more than 70% of those affected; they also left behind 32 field hospitals and donated a thousand medical scholarships.
That tradition of emergency relief goes back to the first years of the Cuban revolution. But it is only one part of an extraordinary and mushrooming global medical internationalism. There are now 50,000 Cuban doctors and nurses working in 60 developing countries. As Canadian professor John Kirk puts it: Cuban medical internationalism has saved millions of lives. But this unparalleled solidarity has barely registered in the western media.

Cuba Has a Lung Cancer VaccineAnd America Wants It
Cuba has for several years had a promising therapeutic vaccine against lung cancer. The 55-year trade embargo led by the US made sure that Cuba was mostly where it stayed. Untilmaybenow.
The Obama administration has, of course, been trying to normalize relations with the island nation. And last month, during New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's visit to Havana, Roswell Park Cancer Institute finalized an agreement with Cuba's Center for Molecular Immunology to develop a lung cancer vaccine and begin clinical trials in the US. Essentially, US researchers will bring the Cimavax vaccine stateside and get on track for approval by the Food and Drug Administration.
"The chance to evaluate a vaccine like this is a very exciting prospect," says Candace Johnson, CEO of Roswell Park. She's excited, most likely, because research on the vaccine so far shows that it has low toxicity, and it's relatively cheap to produce and store. The Center for Molecular Immunology will give Roswell Park all of the documentation (how it's produced, toxicity data, results from past trials) for an FDA drug application; Johnson says she hopes to get approval for testing Cimavax within six to eight months, and to start clinical trials in a year.
How did Cuba end up with a cutting edge immuno-oncology drug? Though the country is justly famous for cigars, rum, and baseball, it also has some of the best and most inventive biotech and medical research in the world. That's especially notable for a country where the average worker earns $20 a month. Cuba spends a fraction of the money the US does on healthcare per individual; yet the average Cuban has a life expectancy on par with the average American. "They've had to do more with less," says Johnson, "so they've had to be even more innovative with how they approach things. For over 40 years, they have had a preeminent immunology community."
Despite decades of economic sanctions, Fidel and Raul Castro made biotechnology and medical research, particularly preventative medicine, a priority. After the 1981 dengue fever outbreak struck nearly 350,000 Cubans, the government established the Biological Front, an effort to focus research efforts by various agencies toward specific goals. Its first major accomplishment was the successful (and unexpected) production of interferon, a protein that plays a role in human immune response. Since then, Cuban immunologists made several other vaccination breakthroughs, including their own vaccines for meningitis B and hepatitis B, and monoclonal antibodies for kidney transplants.

In early 2007, I began studying medicine at the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba. I entered the program not knowing much about the Cuban healthcare system, other than that it was universal and free. Now thats a system I want to learn from, I thought to myself, Its a system we could all learn from. Five years later, what have I learned?
There are many subtle and not so subtle differences between the Cuban and the U.S. health care systems which have allowed the Cubans to equal the U.S. with respect to their health statistics, but at a much lower cost and with better preventative and primary care. In this paper I analyze just one of the reasons for the differences between the two systems; Cuba produces more primary care practitioners per capita. How do they do it? Medical education in Cuba is free, all doctors interested in specializing must first serve two years working in primary care, and graduating doctors are not driven to specialize by salary incentives. This socialist approach towards medicine and medical education assures the human resources necessary to provide universal and preventative healthcare to all.
People marvel at how Cuba has accomplished so much with so little. And they marvel with good reason. According to the World Health Organization, Cuba spent only $503 per capita on healthcare in 2009, the U.S. spent almost 15 times that sum. In fact we in the US spent $421 per person just on the administration of the private healthcare insurance system, almost enough to fund the Cuban system. [1] [2] Despite dramatically lower costs, Cuba has some of the best health statistics and health indicators of any country around the world.
Although people like to compare and contrast the health statistics of the U.S. and Cuba, I think this a bit preposterous. Cuba, a small island in the Caribbean, is being compared to one of the largest countries in the Americas with a very different history. So in the table below, I have shown some health statistics on Cuba and the U.S. as well as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Dominican Republic and Haiti are Cubas Caribbean neighbors; similar in size, history and geographic location.

I "perscribe" a thorough, thoughtful reading of physicist Fred Alan Wolf's "The Dreaming Universe."

No one is saying it should be illegal. Homeopathy is a choice. But some chose to call it nonsense.

Hope it will be a great revelation for our homeopath friends who fight with me over the issue of disease-specific combinations that the homeopathic medicine, Prevengho-VIR used in CUBA as preventive for COVID 19 is not a SINGLE DRUG belonging to any pharmacopoeia, but a SPECIAL ANTIVIRAL FORMULATION prepared by different potentized drugs.

BTW: It's interesting that the strength is 200 which is the strength I always use and the recommended strength for use on horses, but 200 is very hard to come by unless you have an NMD or herbalist. Fortunately, I do have this connection.

(2,910 posts)British Crown Prince Charles has been "101 per cent" cured of COVID-19 using Ayurveda and Homeopathy treatment, Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Naik has insisted, claiming the reason why the Prince's office may have denied acknowledging the cure, is because England does not formally recognise Ayurveda, as a medical science.
"I am proud that the Ministry which I head, managed to cure such a great man, there is no greater credit than this. He may have some problem (admitting to it) because the system in his country does not give recognition to Ayurveda. He may have felt he would violate rules, which is why his refusal to admit is obvious," Naik told a local cable news channel in an interview late on Monday.
"I believe 101 per cent, that he has been cured (using Ayurveda and Homeopathy)," Naik also said.
On April 2, Naik had told a press conference in Goa, that Prince Charles had been cured of COVID-19 after seeking treatment from a Bengaluru-based alternative treatment resort, SOUKYA International Holistic Health Centre' run by a doctor Isaac Mathai.

Their methods of using the body's own immune system to fight cancer were literally labeled as a form of "witchcraft" back in the 1980's, but is now considered cutting edge research. Now they're spreading these treatments to the rest of the world, despite the U.S.'s continued trade blockade.

Until someone you care about has a health problem that modern medicine cannot begin to address after many months & you begin trying cheap, non toxic alternatives & see instant improvement or cure, please don't judge.
Also, I highly recommend Richard Gerber, MD's book: "Vibrational Medicine," and Fred Alan Wolf's "The Dreaming Universe," for some enlightenment on energy.
PS - It is a different principle: like cures like, which is perhaps why it is not understood well. There are still a fair amount of homeopathic hospitals in existence, btw. This modality is absolutely denigrated by pharmaceutical companies, as is neurotherapy. Follow the money folks. 😉
To each their own. Stay well!

Rev. Tony Spell held a crowded service Tuesday night at his Life Tabernacle Church in East Baton Rouge, according to WAFB. Although Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has banned gatherings of more than 50 people and President Donald Trump recently suggested groups of no more than 10, Spell believes there is no risk to his congregation because the virus is "politically motivated."
The pastor also suggested that his congregants were not at risk from COVID-19 because the church is a "hospital" where "anointed handkerchiefs" have the ability to heal people of multiple diseases.

In Communist-run Cuba, the private sector helps the needy as coronavirus spreads
Sarah Marsh, Rodrigo Gutierrez

HAVANA (Reuters) - Upmarket restaurants are delivering free meals to the elderly, while a fashion firm donates face masks. A business consultancy calls on its clients to donate hygiene products and artisanal soap shops gift their wares to low income households.
In Communist-run Cuba, the fledging private sector is rushing to set up solidarity initiatives for those most vulnerable to the coronavirus outbreak, demonstrating the state no longer has a monopoly on helping the neediest.
Sometimes the two are even joining forces to combat the common invisible enemy.
Saverio Grisell, the Italian co-owner of restaurant Bella Ciao, which usually teems with expats, tourists and affluent Cubans, says he discussed how he could help with the local Committee for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR).
The president of my CDR gave me a list of 29 elderly people and I decided to give them a meal for free every day, he said.

(160,527 posts)Humanitarian deterrence of the virus, not Cold Warera regime change, should be the top priority of US foreign policy.

EDITORS NOTE: The Nation believes that helping readers stay informed about the impact of the coronavirus crisis is a form of public service. For that reason, this article, and all of our coronavirus coverage, is now free. Please subscribe to support our writers and staff, and stay healthy.
On March 25, as a team of Cuban doctors and medical technicians set up field hospitals in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy to treat thousands of Italians infected with Covid-19, the State Department issued an absurd warning, via Twitter, against accepting Cuban humanitarian support. Host countries seeking Cubas help for #COVID-19 should scrutinize agreements and end labor abuses, the message stated. #Cuba offers its international medical missions to those afflicted with #COVID-19 only to make up the money it lost when countries stopped participating in the abusive program, a reference to right-wing governments, such as those in Brazil and Bolivia, which under US pressure last year kicked out thousands of Cuban doctors providing medical servicesa decision that has come back to haunt the populations of those countries as the coronavirus spreads.
Never mind that the 52 members of the Cuban medical team in Italy are risking their own lives to save those of citizens of a major European nation that is part of the NATO alliance. Or that Cuba, with its highly successful track record of developing antiviral drugs and providing rapid-response support for victims of epidemics and natural disasters, is a much-needed ally in the international struggle against the worst threat the world has confronted in recent history. For the Trump administration, scoring political points in Florida with crass, unwarranted attacks on Cubas humanitarian commitment remains a top priority.
But in this dire moment of dread and pestilence, as the writer Ariel Dorfman has described our current crisis, it is obvious that US political and foreign policy priorities must fundamentally change. With the survival of the world at stake, Washingtons punitive efforts to roll back the Cuban revolution have never seemed so petty, and so abjectly counterproductive to real US national security interests, as they do now. Rather than condemn Cubas humanitarian contributions to fighting the virus around the world, Washington should be actively supporting them. The most immediate way to do that is to suspend US sanctions that severely compromise Cubas efforts to safeguard its citizens at home as well as bring medical services to so many others abroad.
. . .
But unlike most nations, Cubas ability to confront the pandemic is hobbled by severe US sanctions that have escalated under the Trump administration. The trade embargo, almost six decades old, continues to hamper Cubas financial transactions and its ability to export and import needed materials. Among other punitive measures, the Trump administration has effectively penalized foreign shipping companies ferrying cargo from other countries to Cuba, impeding the flow of oil, foodstuffs, and other commerce critical to the daily needs of Cubas citizenry. Even before the coronavirus crisis hit, the Cuban economy was experiencing chronic shortages. There is such a lack of textiles on the island, for example, that the Cuban government has called upon its citizens to manufacture cloth face masks at home to mitigate the spread of the virus.

(57,073 posts)Pharma squelched neurotherapy too, decades ago. Talk about nonsense! Neurotherapy is brain training, sort of like Dyno tuning your brain waves. Lol
Pharma said it must be a "hippie" thing because people felt so darned good after sessions. Why wouldn't one feel superb when brain is functioning at its very best?
My first comment after a session was, "Holy hell, doc, why would anyone ever do drugs to feel good when they could have a session?" 🤣👍 The answer is because people don't know about it, generally, thanks to pharma.
And there is plenty of objective medical research reflecting robust results from neurotherapy for many maladies, many of which ... wait for it ... are either treated with expensive & often harmful, toxic chemicals via pharma to "manage symptoms" or are corrected through brain wave training.
Follow the $$$$. Always.
I would never wish this upon anyone but, perhaps, until a person goes through a medical life-threatening crisis with a loved one which is exacerbated by drugs, or for which drugs are completely ineffective (while literally destroying organs), one might not be compelled with a desire to research outside the proverbial box or to develop an appreciative awareness that in most cases Mother Nature has already provided what we need to attain and maintain homeostasis. In fact, most drugs are made from plants - herbs & such. lol
As for those who so vehemently attack homeopathy and anecdotal, qualitative resesrch - yes, there is such a thing! - I challenge you to go to a health food store & spend about $10 for a bottle of spray on arnica.
The next time you smash your thumb with a hammer, try your normal pharma drugs first. Then, when the throbbing returns or becomes too intense, spritz your thumb with arnica spray a couple of times, then let's have a chitty chat about whether homeopathy is "woo woo" stuff. Oh, and you quite likely might be surprised to find that your fingernail doesn't turn black & fall off, as has been the case for me & several friends. It's good stuff. You do yourself a disservive by limiting your thinking, imho.
PS- Never use arnica on cuts or broken skin. 👍

(2,945 posts)in it but other flower remedies as well.
One time my friend's horse pulled back when I tried to tie it to a rail and my hand got squished between the rope and rail. As soon as I got free I started shouting to my friends to get me my Rescue Remedy. I really thought one of my fingers had been broken but about a half hour later all pain was gone and no bruising. (My finger wasn't broken, just badly squished.) RR works to heal the pain AND remove the emotional trauma associated with the injury. Big pharma has been trying for years to duplicate the benefits of RR and have not been as successful as using the real thing (RR).

It seems to escape them so impressively that the powerful drugs in use do have a natural origin.
