Kansas coronavirus update: Gov. Laura Kelly condemns A.G., legislators for ‘political attack’ as deaths, infections surge

Republican legislators overturn executive order limiting church crowds; attorney general had advised police not to enforce order; health officials report surge to 38 deaths, 1,046 cases

TOPEKA — A Republican-controlled panel of Kansas legislative leaders on Wednesday voted to overturn an executive order limiting attendance at church gatherings and funerals, igniting a fiery rebuke from Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.

Kelly blasted Republicans, including Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, for engaging in a “shamefully political attack” that undermines her administration’s efforts to control the spread of COVID-19. The dispute erupted as health officials revealed the largest single-day spike in coronavirus deaths and infections in Kansas.

The state added 11 deaths, a 40% increase, for a total of 38. Confirmed cases jumped from 900 to 1,046.

Kelly announced on Tuesday she was removing exemptions for churches and funerals from a statewide order that limits gatherings of more than 10 individuals. Schmidt responded Wednesday by issuing a memo that advised police not to enforce it.

The Legislative Coordinating Council then voted 5-2 along party lines to rescind the governor’s order. Because the order had replaced an earlier directive, the action invited confusion about whether there is no longer a statewide ban on any kind of large public gathering......................

The repugs there are a special kind of nuts, almost as bad and inimical to life as drumpf himself.

And it's not just the legislators who voted to overturn Governor Kelly's order. I am sure they are all getting an earful from the people who are tired of being in their homes, tired of their businesses not being open, tired of being parents to their children, tired of this, tired of that. They are all of bunch of whiny ass babies who think they are being "punished" or their lives are being "ruined." As I told one woman on FB, you can come back from financial "ruination." You know what you can't come back from? DEATH.

Everybody around here who worships money, the size of their house or the numbers in their 401k is bitching and moaning about how "unfair" this all is. Tell that to my neighbor who just buried her husband and her son. Well, she actually didn't bury them. She was informed that they died, and now she is in her home, alone, mourning, on 14 day quarantine, being consoled by people on the phone and the internet.

I believe Governor Kelly has been doing a very good job. Kansas' case numbers HAD been trending lower. I had hope that maybe we were about to turn the corner. However, our case numbers are now over the 1,000 mark. It's sad that those asshats in the legislature are getting in the way of people in this state trying to do the right thing. More people will die as a result.

I hope whoever voted to overrule the Governor's order enjoys whatever Easter service they choose to attend. But they'd better stay the hell away from me. The blood of Kansans is on their hands.

There is something morally and mentally wrong with any person who can't
temporarily put their religious gatherings on hold during this extraordinary time.
They are outrageously selfish.

They have absolutely no consideration for society's safety.
This is life or death stuff we are dealing with here.

The County Commission here in Sedgwick Co which includes Wichita and surrounding area (approx 500K people) said tough SHIT we still won't allow gatherings of more than ten people. Those Commissioners are all Republicans except for one Dem.

Their smart enough to see just what the HELL could happen in the next few weeks if thousands attend Church this Sunday and all of them after that. Of course then all other businesses would want to open back up too,I know I would if my place was shuttered.

I'd have to look and see what Johnson Co is doing about this, that's in the KC Kansas area, they've had more cases and deaths that Sedgwick Co.
