Kansas coronavirus update: Gov. Laura Kelly takes fight over church crowds to Supreme Court

Governor says LCC doesn’t have authority to interfere; ACLU files lawsuit for early release of vulnerable prisoners; lawsuit says prison staff are threatening inmates who report symptoms of COVID-19; health secretary lashes out at Republicans, answers kids’ questions; state records 42 deaths, 1,106 infections

TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly announced Thursday she has instructed legal counsel to file lawsuit against the Republican-controlled panel that overturned her executive order limiting the size of church crowds.

The governor said she would challenge the authority of the Legislative Coordinating Council, a panel of five Republican and two Democratic legislative leaders, and ask the Kansas Supreme Court to expedite the matter.

Kelly issued an executive order earlier this week to criminalize gatherings of 10 or more individuals at churches and funerals, a decision made after health officials connected three outbreaks of COVID-19 to religious gatherings. The LCC voted along party lines to reject the order, with Republicans saying it was good public policy but a violation of constitutional rights.

“What the LCC did yesterday, in concert with the Kansas attorney general, weakened and confused our emergency response efforts, putting every Kansan at risk,” Kelly said. “I will not stand by with lives in jeopardy.”....................

our Senate is trying to get a vote to put it to the people to vote on. To make it a constitutional denial of ANY abortion, no matter what the reason. I am not certain how that would turn out. They want to add it to another ballot, one that usually does not get a lot of attention giving them an even greater chance.

The County commission made it's own statement that the County rules of no more than ten people at a gathering stands,no matter what the flaming religious nut jobs in Topeka say. And...almost all on the Commission here are Republicans. One of the worst of the worst is Susan Wagle who is also running for that US Senate seat that Pat Roberts is retiring from. If she wins watch the hell out. By the way, this is from her campaign site, shows just what a fucking hypocrite she is:

"The health, safety and well-being of all Kansans is Senator Wagle's top priority. Please stay home as much as possible and follow the Center for Disease Control recommendations. Also, check on an elderly neighbor or loved one to make sure they are okay. Together we will get through this stronger than before. President Trump has extended the social distancing guidelines through April 30th. Governor Kelly has ordered a statewide shelter in place order with exemptions for essential businesses and employees."

Yeah Susan, think a Church is an essential business??

Barbara Bollier might have the best shot but Paul David might run. Kathleen Sebelius was asked to run and I think could really win that seat but she declined. Bollier is a State Senator.

That crackpot Kobach is running and nut job Susan Wagle--who wants all church's open right now are two on the Republican side that are well known. Roger Marshall who is US Rep is also running. He's a doctor who has done everything he can to kill off the ACA. Nice bunch........

for Paul Davis again. What a coward he is. I am not certain a vote for Kathleen is really a left vote but she is certainly more stable than Davis, she will not chicken out and has actual values.

I think Bollier and Sebelius could win against either Kobach or Wagle. I have no idea about Marshall. I don't think Davis would stand a chance against anyone.
