U.S. Now Has the World's Deadliest Coronavirus Outbreak

American deaths from the coronavirus passed Italy’s, affirming the U.S.’s spot as the epicenter of the global pandemic.

Deaths from the virus reached at least 18,860 in the U.S., according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Italy had 619 new deaths for a total of 18,849. New York reported 783 new fatalities on Saturday morning -- yet to be included in the Johns Hopkins numbers -- and the U.S. figure will rise throughout the day as more states report data.

The heavy toll in the U.S. -- and much of Europe -- is linked to the failure to enact widespread measures like mass testing and social distancing early enough to prevent the virus from taking hold. Parts of the U.S. were still not locked down in recent days, creating the opportunity for wider spread in places that haven’t suffered as much as hot spots in New York and Detroit

That the U.S. has more deaths than Italy isn’t that surprising given that its population of 330 million is five times greater. The statistics may also be incomplete, thanks to differences in testing and reporting among countries....................

...........Last Milestone: The World Just Hit 1 Million Coronavirus Infections

That day, President Donald Trump said at a White House press briefing that the U.S. had the situation “so well under control.” There were only 15 cases of coronavirus across the country, he said, and “we’re going very substantially down, not up.”

China has more population than America and they truly did start from scratch.

But they were proactive much quicker.

Trump had warning and chose to pretend all was well in order to make himself look good.

Doing nothing for weeks allowed the Trumpvirus to spread uninhibited and now we have significantly surpassed China/Italy to become #1 in deaths and cases.

In fact it is far down the list. All the European countries, except Germany, have higher deaths per capita and also higher fatality rates from those who are infected with Covid. Would you rather be a random person in the U.S. or a random person in Europe? If you choose Europe, which the WHO says is the epicenter of Covid, you have a death wish.

U.S. Covid deaths per million 61
Italy 322
Spain 350
Belgium 293
Netherlands 153

Covid fatality rate
U.S. 3.85%
Italy 12.79

A lie is not "statistical analysis."

formet9thward's link shows the US is near the top end of the countries with the highest death rates, not the bottom half, not even close. Sure, there are some European countries with higher death rates than us, but when you look at the list of countries in the world at the link, we are NOT "far down on the list." Canada's death rate is less than a third of ours. Many European countries have lower death rates than us, like Denmark, Finland and Czechia (Czech Republic).

And that's with us doing a really shitty job of counting our Covid-19 dead who die in nursing homes or at home, who are often simply recorded as cardiac arrests, since they were never tested and we don't test dead bodies. For example, ten times as many New Yorkers are dying in their homes than normal and they aren't being tested because WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TESTS, THANKS TO TRUMP. https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213260406

Neither did Taiwan, or Singapore, or Germany. Germany developed a Covid-19 test in mid-January, adopted by the WHO. Germany and South Korea immediately started mass producing that test and were able to do targeted quarantines. That is why they have MUCH lower death rates than us.

Trump set a horrible example for the rest of the world. Sadly, many countries assumed America must know something they don't, after all we are a rich country with lots of experts. But what many of these countries, and many Americans, fail to understand is that we are led by a malignant narcissist and pathological liar who has no functioning checks on his corruption and incompetence.

Raw numbers are absolutely meaningless. Population must be take into account.

The lost days and colossal failures to respond in the US are inexcusable and will ultimately cost thousands of deaths that would have been preventable. I am not minimizing the horrific consequences.

The actual number of deaths here is also far greater than reported because the virus was circulating and killing people who were never tested and therefore weren't counted. But without analysis and more data, we don't know how much greater the actual number is relative to reported.

All we have to go on is the number of deaths reported. How comparatively "deadly" the outbreak is based on those numbers MUST be measured in the number of per million reported on the worldmeter site.

And by that measure, the US ranks 9th among the countries that report more than 500 deaths.

Let's STOP reporting numbers out of context. That is what propagandists do.

| Country | Total Deaths | Deaths/1M pop
1 | Spain | 17,113 | 366
2 | Italy | 19,899 | 329
3 | Belgium | 3,600 | 311
4 | France | 14,393 | 221
5 | Netherlands | 2,737 | 160
6 | UK | 10,612 | 156
7 | Switzerland | 1,106 | 128
8 | Sweden | 899 | 89
9 | USA | 21,991 | 66
10 | Iran | 4,474 | 53
