Trump wonders if COVID-19 genomes gave fake quotes to the NYT in bizarre Saturday outburst

Source: raw story

Published 2 hours ago on April 11, 2020

President Donald Trump lashed out at The New York Times on Saturday.

“So now the Fake News The New York Times is tracing the CoronaVirus origins back to Europe, NOT China. This is a first! I wonder where (sic) the Failing New York Times got for this one? Are there any NAMED sources?” Trump wondered.

However, the reporting from The Times was not based on anonymous sources.

“New research indicates that the coronavirus began to circulate in the New York area by mid-February, weeks before the first confirmed case, and that travelers brought in the virus mainly from Europe, not Asia,” The Times reported on Wednesday.

The story cited now research by geneticists at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the N.Y.U. Grossman School of Medicine.

“Both teams analyzed genomes from coronaviruses taken from New Yorkers starting in mid-March,” the newspaper noted. “The research revealed a previously hidden spread of the virus that might have been detected if aggressive testing programs had been put in place.”

New York City’s first confirmed COVID-19 cases are from primarily European and United States sources, according to the first molecular epidemiology study of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, conducted by Mount Sinai.

The study, which was published online, was led by Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai researchers and is the first to trace the source of the cases. The study shows that the epidemic in the city predominately arose through untracked transmission between the United States and Europe. It also found limited evidence to support any direct introductions from China, where the virus originated, or other locations in Asia.

"These results show that SARS-CoV-2 came to the New York City area predominately via Europe through untracked transmissions," Viviana Simon, MD, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at ISMMS, said. "Only one of the cases studied was infected with a virus that was a clear candidate for introduction from Asia, and that virus is most closely related to viral isolates from Seattle, Washington."...

Good God in Butter the man is stupid. Please hold me and tell me he didn't say that.

A genome is the sum of the genetic material of an organism We have people who
are called geneticists, molecular geneticists, and microbiologists who can look at
protein sequences and then they can tell things about the genome and where it
came from.

He and the other Republicans have made it pretty clear that they want to lay the blame for the Pandemic at China's (and WHO's) feet. Not that Europe or anywhere else should be blamed for the Pandemic and/or the failure to keep it from spreading here. It is apparent that we were warned about the possibility for a Pandemic to spread here in the US in at least enough time to marshal forces and prepare for it earlier. Neither China nor WHO had anything to do with Trump's lack of response to information that was circulating in January/February (and possibly earlier).

There was some large number of people (40,000?) who came through from China after tRump "blocked" flights. Some were legitimate airlifts repatriating citizens. Others not so much. Few of those returnees were asked question about their health and even fewer had their temperature taken. Many were crowded into arrival corridors.

Why did tRump close China and not Europe? Because he is a racist.

He could not conceive of a pandemic spread by white people.

No good just halting flights from PRC. Covid-19 could have come into the US from anywhere. Flight from PRC to Canada, and from Canada to Washington state... At the same time flight from PRC to some city in Europe (Northern Italy?) And from there to the USA (New York?) and spread from there.

Viruses have DNA type traits and thus they can be somewhat traced. DJT just doesn't seem to get science, does he?

I was just waiting for confirmation of what I believed it to be:

Racist orangevirus closed in flights from China and then said there were 15 cases that would go down to zero. (The stupid, it burns!)

The fact that people travel from China to Europe, some of them infected transmitted the coronavirus to others in Europe, and then these people took flights to the United States from Europe (mostly to New York), eluded the very stable genius...

LOCK HIM UP before it's too late (it's way too late already)!

That is most likely how the European strain came here, in fact, the first hot spot in New Rochelle, NY was traced to one of those returnees.

But it was long after mid Feb........

Luckily I had requested the week b4 of 7wo7rees that he try to see if he could work from home. He worked in a tower complex with 8K plus streaming in and out every day. He started working from home morning of the 16th. We were lucky but risk had to be reduced.
We live with and take care of my 84 year old mom.
And we both have health conditions that put us in high risk zone.

China to Italy where they have leather factories near Florence. The staff flying back and forth from Wuhan to Milan.

Switzerland where I live, gets about 40% of their tourism dollars from China. 40 million people visit Switzerland every year. Switzerland borders Italy and that is where most of the concentration of cases are in Switzerland. Also, they didn't shut the border between Italy and Switzerland soon enough as border crossers work on both sides. Remember those skiers in France had been infected that were holidaying France ski resorts. There was a connection from one of them that had recently flown in from China.

Then all of those tourists around Europe going back and forth from Italy from all over the country, including NYC. They shut down the flights from China but then those in China took other flights via Europe to get to the states until those flight were shut down.

By then, it was too late. It was already in the states, mostly Seattle and NYC.
And here we are.

I've flown Europe to Chicago O'Hare and those hallways from the gates to customs and passport control are LONG. It takes a good 5 minute walk up and down escalators to the passport control area.

Anyhow.

Not too difficult to trace back the origins of the virus. The US version may well have it's origin in Europe, but where did it come from before then?

Just a matter of studying the base sequence of the viral RNA from different places, and comparing them.
The more the virus replicates, the more base sequence errors occur. So the one with the most errors would be from ground zero.
And that may well be anywhere. Only further research into the base sequences of viral RNA from different geographical locations will tell the full story.

But that is only of academic interest, people are kind of busy right now with more important things.

As always, Trump's simplistic view of reality - 'It is all China's fault!' - may not be the whole true picture.
