Arkansas asks court to reinstate abortion ban due to virus

Source: Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas’ attorney general asked a federal appeals court Wednesday to allow the state to ban most surgical abortions during the coronavirus pandemic.

Attorney General Leslie Rutledge asked the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to lift a judge’s order that allowed the state’s only surgical abortion clinic to continue performing the procedure. The state last week ordered the clinic, Little Rock Family Planning Services, to not perform surgical abortions unless they were needed to protect the life and health of the mother.

The state claimed the clinic was violating an order requiring health providers to reschedule any elective surgeries that could be safely postponed. Other states have tried to ban or restrict abortions during the pandemic using similar orders.

Rutledge’s filing said U.S. District Kristine Baker issued an order without allowing the state to respond “declaring abortion a judicial sacred cow — untouchable even in an effort to save lives.”

People are becoming infected, infecting others, dying, overwhelming our health care systems, etc., etc., and all these swinging dicks can think about is banning abortion ?

As my Aussie friends often say, "Fuck me running."

Does the assault on American women NEVER end with these fuck nozzles ?

Remember that their gov - Kemp, said LAST WEEK that he didn't know that COVID-19 could be spread by people who were not exhibiting symptoms. In other words, the word "asymptomatic" is not in his lexicon.

Tell me why Stacey Abrams lost that race again ?

1. Abortions do not require significant PPE. If Abortions are really causing a shortfall in PPE, that is a problem that has NOTHING to do with Abortions and more to do with outside factors.
2. Births/Deliveries require significant PPE. If the point of this is to prevent a shortfall in PPE, then forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term actually EXACERBATES the problem, in addition to the initial problem of forcing women to carry unwanted to pregnancies to term, which is bad enough.
3. Abortions cannot just be "delayed" like other medical procedures, especially thanks to the raft of restrictions and burdens that states like Alabama have placed on the procedure.
4. This is about right-wing Republican-controlled states taking advantage of a serious medical crisis to achieve a goal they're seeking, specifically banning all abortions in open defiance of Roe V. Wade without demonstrated evidence of a substantial benefit to public health or safety.

I've watched AG Leslie since she was elected. (I had never heard of her before.) I've also fumed through her annual "reports" at the Bar Association meeting. Leslie does not live in either a logical or fact-based universe. She's also just dumber than dog-s(!#.

Her "reports" to the Arkansas Bar Association are not so infuriating as embarrassing. It is difficult to imagine that anyone so apparently ignorant succeeded in graduating from law school and passing the bar exam.

I was born in Arkansas and have lived here most of my life. I have never met anyone under the age of 80 with so syrupy an accent. She is from Batesville, not Booger Hollow. She didn't hear people talk like this as a child. I'm convinced it is an affectation.

Arkansas is a bloody-red, Trump supporting state.

Leslie is a darning of the Trumpsters in Arkansas. They aren't interested in whether she is a competent Attorney General. Their only concerns are abortion and guns.

I ask the question as someone who is medical ignorant about birth and genuinely curious. The live birth doesn't require an anesthesiologist like the c-section or surgical abortion, but otherwise they all share the need for a doctor and a couple (two?) assistants don't they?

thus the need for PPE (at least that's what I had heard elsewhere) and there may need to be a C-Section done or other medical complications.

I make it a point not to personally attack judges. They tend to have long memories.

I'm sure Leslie's right-wing base will eat this up but the State of Arkansas will have other cases before Judge Baker. She can't beat Sarah Smokey-Eyes for Governor in 2022, I don't care how much weird stuff she does. Her office is going to be uncomfortable before the federal courts in Arkansas in the meanwhile.

Not a smooth move.
