Russia Says It Will Accept Trump's Offer Of Ventilators To Treat Coronavirus

MOSCOW — The Kremlin says Russia will gratefully accept U.S. President Donald Trump’s offer to provide ventilators for coronavirus patients.

Trump said Wednesday the U.S. was ready to send ventilators to Russia, saying “they’re having a hard time in Moscow. We’re going to help them.” He added the U.S. also stands ready to provide ventilators to other countries, including Italy, Spain and France.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov hailed Trump’s offer as “very positive,” saying in Thursday’s call with reporters that “Russia will certainly accept the kind offer if necessary.”

Russia has registered 27,938 coronavirus cases and 232 deaths. Officials have scrambled to secure ventilators and other essential supplies amid an exponential growth in infections.

Ventilators delivered by Russia to the United States for coronavirus patients were manufactured by a Russian company that is under US sanctions, Russia's RBC business daily reported on Friday.

A Russian military plane carrying the ventilators along with other medical supplies including personal protective equipment landed in New York on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone.

Russian state television footage of the plane's unloading showed boxes of "Aventa-M" ventilators, which are produced by the Ural Instrument Engineering Plant (UPZ) in the city of Chelyabinsk, 1,500 km (930 miles) east of Moscow, RBC reported.

UPZ is part of a holding company called Concern Radio-Electronic Technologies (KRET), which itself is a unit of Russian state conglomerate Rostec.

KRET has been under US sanctions since July 2014, with US firms and nationals barred from doing business with it.

The issue was further complicated by the question of whether it was the United States or Russia's sovereign wealth fund RDIF, which was added to US sectoral sanctions in 2015, that paid for the ventilators.

A senior administration official on Friday said sanctions did not apply to medical supplies.

I don't necessarily disbelieve it, but I will withhold judgment until an American news outlet reports on it using sources not tainted by Putin's government.

I guess what I'm saying is: this just doesn't make any sense, not even a little. Trump and the Governors have been in agreement about the need for ventilators and the shortage of them in the U.S. -- their disagreement is about the numbers needed, not the shortages. So why would Trump even consider a move that would work so tremendously against him?

I'm going to wait and see. Even Fox would be outraged if they found evidence of this. And CNN would be all over it.

I've been wondering where all the medical supplies were going. He's sending out broken ventilators and PPE with dry rot to the states. Then after telling states they were on their own, he's confiscating new supplies they're buying and stealing shipments overseas. He intercepted a shipment to Barbados and is preventing masks from being sent to Cuba. Germany has accused the U.S. of modern day acts of piracy. So he has been fucking with supply chains on a global level.

I've been wondering where the medical supplies are and where they're going. It wouldn't surprise me if they were going to Russia or even some to North Korea. I also agree that this story needs more investigation. If it's verified, the country could very well explode with rage.

Any American President could have ordered the building of a factory to turn out vents. We could have paid for it, and done it. Then, we could have offered vents around the world.
