Midwest Governors Announce Plan to Coordinate on Reopening of Economy

Governors in other parts of the U.S. have also announced similar plans

Governors in seven Midwest states, including Illinois, have announced a plan to work together on reopening the regional economy when the coronavirus pandemic begins to subside.

The group includes governors in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana and Kentucky.

"We are doing everything we can to protect the people of our states and slow the spread of COVID-19, and we are eager to work together to mitigate the economic crisis this virus has caused in our region," the group said in a joint statement. "Here in the Midwest, we are bound by our commitment to our people and the community. We recognize that our economies are all reliant on each other, and we must work together to safely reopen them so hardworking people can get back to work and businesses can get back on their feet."

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker had indicated such a partnership was in the works after governors in other parts of the U.S. made similar announcements.

"I began this conversation really late last week with some of the East Coast governors, and then over the last few days with my counterparts in Midwest states surrounding us," Pritzker said during his daily coronavirus briefing Tuesday. "You know, our goal, of course for this is to start to think about, you know, what are the preconditions for beginning to allow certain kinds of businesses to open their doors again, to expand the definition of, you know, those who can work or those businesses that can have their doors open."

I said early on the trump would never unite our country.

It turns out, he sort of is.

Unfortunately (for him), he's the one being united against.

I was afraid it might be 'every state for itself' but we are cooperating! These alliances are also firewalls against Trump interference.

It's easier to say "no' as a group than to stay it standing alone.

Not a lawyer ..

In business law the "Uniform Commercial Code" -- one of a set of "uniform acts" that a state agrees to -- makes life much easier for carrying out commerce. States adopt a uniform act (not imposed from feds). Similar mechanism is "interstate compact".

Anyway, my DU friends: how do you see this product taking shape? Permanent or temporary? And what would be the best entity to create, update, manage?

Both states are part of the Great Lakes Compact, they both have a reciprocity agreement with each other where their students can attend college in either state and pay the in-state tuition rate, and although it expired several years ago they used to have an agreement where you only needed to file a single income tax if you lived in one state but worked in the other.

13. I have not seen any recent poll numbers on Pritzker

But he was not well liked when he forced the primary election over objections of poll workers. Especially since the Chicago Board of Elections asked him to postpone for health reasons. He refused and just the other day the Board of Elections said voters were exposed to covid in the polling places.
