Okahoma City Observes 25th Bombing Anniversary
Source: CNN
It's been 25 years, but the people of Oklahoma City will never forget.
On April 19, 1995, a truck bomb was detonated in Oklahoma City by a right-wing extremist, killing 168 people and injuring several hundred more. Nineteen children were among those who lost their lives as a result of the blast at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
Until the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, the bombing was the deadliest act of terrorism on US soil.
Each year the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, which was built on the site of the Murrah building to educate visitors about the impact of violence, hosts a remembrance ceremony, marked by 168 seconds of silence and the reading of the victims' names.

(12,265 posts)He told a reporter once he considered them "collateral damage". I am not a person who has a strong belief in the death penalty but he truly deserved to die. So did Terry Nichols but he got to live and keeps trying to get out. If he does, my guess is some father is going to be waiting on him.

(23,152 posts)I'm an ardent opponent of capital punishment, but I happily made an exception in Timothy McVeigh's case! I hope his punishment serves as an example to the other terrorists like him, but I fear they're too ignorant and too messianic to grasp it.

(29,191 posts)team that responded to the bombing.
They were specialists in collapsed building search and rescue.
All I ever heard afterwards was how his team would pull body part after body part out of that sad place. And he didn't talk much about it.

(38,187 posts)They still don't get called terrorists when they do things like bomb federal buildings, bomb businesses, go on a mass shooting spree, or bash someone to death because of their bigotry. They still don't get called terrorists when they mass murder numerous people. They still don't get called terrorists when they murder doctors and maim nurses either.

(23,152 posts)The Bundys, the Dylan Roofs, the Charlottesville gangs, the Eric Rudolphs, the Scott Roeders--they are all terrorists, and should be treated and punished as such!

(38,187 posts)they should not require a super majority to get votes through and go ahead and do it. The last time Democrats had control of Congress, all of a sudden people were saying that anything and everything required a super majority to pass any bills. Why is it only that way when Democrats are in the majority in Congress? No one ever did explain that to me satisfactorily. They just kick the can down the road that way and don't jump on the very rare chance to do something about horrors Americans have to face.

(113,055 posts)And one (Terry McNichols) from an area of Michigan where some of the most recent "protesters" come from. I remember this very clearly and the reports of the babies that died in the day care center.
At least McVeigh finally got what he deserved.

(391 posts)had an incredible message published in "The Oklahoman" Sunday.
I do not know how to link to it. If someone can do so it will be well worth the effort.
He talks about that tragedy and calls for the same courage in our situation now.
How I long for us to again have a President who can read and write.
