Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina Move to Reopen as Hot Spots Emerge
Source: MSN
ATLANTA Residents of Georgia will be allowed on Friday to return to the gym and get haircuts, pedicures, massages and tattoos. Next Monday, they can dine again in restaurants and go to the movies.
With that announcement, Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia on Monday joined officials in other states who are moving ahead with plans to relax restrictions intended to curb the spread of the coronavirus, despite signs that the outbreak is just beginning to strike some parts of the country.
In Tennessee, Gov. Bill Lee said on Monday that he was not extending his safer-at-home order that is set to expire on April 30. According to his office, the vast majority of businesses in 89 counties will be allowed to reopen on May 1. Businesses in Ohio are expected to reopen on that date as well. Were going to do what we think is right what I think is right and that is try to open this economy, Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio said Sunday on NBCs Meet the Press, but do it very, very carefully so we dont get a lot of people killed.
In South Carolina, Gov. Henry McMaster, a Republican, said on Monday that department stores and some other retail businesses that had previously been deemed nonessential would be allowed to reopen on Tuesday, but they must abide by social distancing guidelines. People will also be able to gain access to public beaches on Tuesday.

I believe that if NC had a Repuke governor, the hospital would have been at capacity with covid-19 patients.

(25,979 posts)is supposed to have happened a week ago. Reopening now is just stupid. People are going to die who could have stayed well if they just stayed home. It's surreal how some governors are just going to send people out to die for money and politics.

(45,806 posts)so I'm in the vulnerable group and I don't want to risk my health just because the Governor wants to get the local economy going again. I doubt I'm alone with this thought. We have a Pub Governor & I bet DT contacted him and told him to get this economy going so he can win in Nov.

Except THEY are far fewer than the media would have us believe. (it is all about scripted drama, like Flip or Flop, when Chris and Tarek find they bought a piece a crap house, which happens, like, EVERY show...)
Returning to the way it was, is NEVER going to happen. We are a changed society. Most of us will now always be wary of crowds. If we are in them, it will be reluctant. A true "guilty pleasure". We may be doing it, but we KNOW we shouldn't be. At least not until we at least have a reliable, FOR SURE working vaccine. And that will be years, if ever.

I bet they don't provide decent health insur or provide masks, gloves and goggles and enforce social distancing.

The rationale seems to be that it's ok for people to get this virus as long as they don't overwhelm the hospitals because they need to get the economy going.
Right now, the death rate from this virus is very roughly somewhere between 3 and 21%. Given some time, I believe the medical community will find a way to reduce that and the damage done by this virus to survivors.
This decision to press quickly on bypasses some of that and will kill more people as a consequence. At the very least, I think they should be forced to acknowledge that. There does seem to be this thing with Republicans that people dying to sustain a healthy economy are acceptable losses. Beyond the perils of the risk they're taking, this seems so over the top for a party hell bent on saving every aborted fetus as the expense of well being for a lot of mothers.
It's pretty messed up thinking in my opinion where the almighty buck prevails over human life. Maybe those advocating for abortion rights need to make the financial argument with these people to shut them up when they ignore compassionate grounds.

Just like Rachel says, ignore what they say, watch what they DO.
The media should be all over this.
And the campaign aids could be right on target.

(7,897 posts)We now live in a country driven and ruled by a number of religious zealots and greedy oligarchs.
Critical thought is now officially replaced with dogma and magical thinking. Our native true believers have gone full zombie and require that we follow them off the cliff, or jump before they do.
Moscow Mitch and Lord Rupert have much to answer for, including their pet Hypnotoad and his flock of toadies at 1600 and The Capitol Building.
Nuremberg 2021 will have to run at a brisk pace to keep up with the demand since following orders will not be an acceptable plea.

(9,988 posts)And red states have a lot of working poor, including many minorities. They will go back to work because they need to feed their families and pay their rent. The rent is especially important because when a state is no longer on lockdown many landlords will evict as quickly as possible.
Because I think Republicans are evil, Im thinking this decision is a political calculation only because the economy can withstand a couple more weeks of lockdown. Republicans now know that Covid-19 has a disproportionate death rate among African Americans, most of whom vote for Democrats. In states like Georgia where Kemp won only by cheating, the idea of decimating the African American population must be too appetizing in the words of fake Dr. Oz. In Alabama, Doug Jones won with heavy African American turnout.
The virus has become a tool for Republicans, much like as early settlers were evil enough to give smallpox-infected blankets to Native Americans, among other atrocities. Republicans are evil enough to use Covid-19 risks to get rid of a few more of the wrong voters.

Terrible, terrible signal to be sending right now. Where I live, in rural northeast GA, the virus has only recently been propagating. We need at least another couple weeks, probably a month, in order for quarantine to be considered curve-flattening.
People are going to die because of this. People who rely on other people to do their thinking for them...and the people they recklessly infect.

(787 posts)tRump knows he is trying to open the country too early. This is exactly what he was counting on: a second outbreak. New stay-at-home orders will be issued, right in time for the election. This is why he is pushing so hard against mail-in voting. He knows that any reasonable, responsible voter will stay home. The only people going to the polls will be his braindead supporters.
