Trump to suspend immigration to U.S. for 60 days, citing coronavirus crisis and jobs shortage

Source: Washington Post

President Trump said Tuesday he will halt immigration to the United States for 60 days, a freeze that will block green card recipients from moving to the country but will continue to allow temporary workers on nonimmigrant visas to enter. The president provided a rationale for the unprecedented decision that was primarily economic, arguing that he wants Americans to have access to work as millions of people have lost their jobs amid the coronavirus crisis.

“I will be issuing a temporary suspension of immigration into the United States,” Trump said during a White House briefing Tuesday. “By pausing, we’ll help put unemployed Americans first in line for jobs. It would be wrong to be replacing them with new immigrant labor flown in from abroad.”

Senior White House officials and lawyers met Tuesday to sort out the logistics and legal implications of President Trump’s late-night Twitter proclamation that he would stop immigration to the United States, a move that came with little indication of whom the U.S. government would bar from entry amid the coronavirus outbreak. Trump said the executive order was still being written as of Tuesday night.

[...]

After 60 days, the need for modification will be evaluated “based on economic conditions” in the country, Trump said, conditions that he would personally assess.

Are these protesters too proud to work?

They would rather collect unemployment and live off the gov't than support themselves?

Trump wants to let immigrant farm workers in.

Restaraunt delivery
Store delivery
Custodial for medical institutions
Livestock care

There are a lot of other places that still have jobs open but these crappy people who vote for people like trump and his ilk are actually very lazy and get pissed because others are working harder than they do and that just gets under their skin.

At least where I am stores like Safeway are pretty much hiring on the spot. The fast food places are just about hiring on the spot also. They are so busy filling out orders and running them to curbside or delivering. Places that have never delivered are doing so now.

Widespread!

How thoughtful, unexpected. I’ll have to re-think my perspective...
Oh wait
He thinks immigrants are bringing it.

Or he thinks his Flu Klux Klan will buy it.
Lord have mercy on him. We def will not

Not sure how that will affect things.

How does it protect American Jobs, or guarantee the position is available? The Dems in the House are promoting job protection which will do a far job of mitigating this risk.

I am quite sure none of the protesters want to clean a toilet or for that matter spend 8 hours bent over cutting heads of lettuce in a field.

Or, for Russian wives of oligarchs coming here to birth their spawn.

It's the permanent green card holders that are stuck. I'm sure there will be exceptions for foreign Trump donors.

Our nativist-in-chief (hates immigration and international organizations and trade)/'trickle-down-commander-in-chief' (tax cuts for the rich, deregulation for Wall Street) echoes Hoover I.

Trump has campaigned on restricting/ending immigration for a long time. Coolidge and Hoover did the same. Trump blasts international trade and organizations. Coolidge and Hoover did the same. Economic inequality reached record levels in the 1920's under Coolidge and Hoover. Trump is challenging that record.

This is a golden opportunity to achieve his dream.

I’m assuming this is targeting H1B visas (which is bad enough), but I sure as hell hope foreign students aren’t barred from starting at universities in the Fall.

And I hope like hell I’ll be able to get my UK visa in July so I can get the hell out of here in September.
