Germany's Merkel cautions this is 'beginning' of coronavirus pandemic

Source: nbc

"We cannot return to life before the pandemic," the German chancellor warns. "Our everyday lives will be different."

By Adela Suliman and Andy Eckardt

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday warned that the battle against the coronavirus was in its early stages and that the pandemic looked set to be part of life for the long term.

The leader of Europe's largest economy also lent her support to the embattled World Health Organization, which has come under fire from President Donald Trump for its handling of the global pandemic.

"No one likes to hear this, but we are living at the beginning of the pandemic," Merkel said in an address to the Bundestag, the lower house of Parliament.

She also warned that Germany was still on "thin ice."

People will want things to get back to normal, and they won't, for quite some time.

... so how can we "get back" to it? That is exactly Prime Minister Merkel's point. Oddly enough, people are listening to her and deciding that she's right.

i.e. if there is a vaccine and/or a very effective treatment/cure.

I don't think clubs with music/dancing, theaters, stadiums, etc. will be closed forever.

In time like this, you need a lying, tax-cheat, real-estate fraudster game show host in a position of leadership.

it could well involve 3 or perhaps more waves, it could involve as we've learned this week mutations or multiple strains, it could well involve a year or two or more, a vaccine may be elusive or only active on some strains, it could still mutate.

Don't really know what to say. Life has changed. There is only protecting self and loved ones now. Consumerism doesn't matter so much anymore.

scientifically literate in a lot of different areas. I am terribly afraid she is right about this, given the pattern of other pandemics that first emerged in the spring. Summer is likely to be the calm before the storm, the disease spreading a bit more slowly until people are confined indoors again, at which point it will be back with a vengeance. I have never wanted to be wrong about something, although Dumpster Fire came close.
