U.S. warship heads to port after coronavirus outbreak

Source: Reuters

U.S. APRIL 24, 2020 / 10:50 AM / UPDATED AN HOUR AGO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - At least 18 sailors aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer have tested positive for the new coronavirus, U.S. officials said on Friday, dealing another blow to the military as it faces fallout over its handling of an outbreak on an aircraft carrier last month.

The Navy confirmed a Reuters report on the outbreak aboard the Kidd, a destroyer that was on a counter-narcotics mission, and said the number of those infected with the virus on the vessel was expected to rise.

In a statement, the Navy said a sailor who had become sick was medically evacuated off the ship and later tested positive for the virus, prompting further testing of the crew that led to the discovery of additional positive cases.

A specialized medical team has been sent to the ship to carry out contact tracing and more onsite testing, it added.

Trump will have no problem releasing that info.

He told the world (Russia and China) how many subs to look for near N. Korea.

Jared feels that a security clearance is a license to sell our country's secrets.

of six months. Theoretically a quarter of them are at sea at one time or preparing to go to sea. Subs are a lot less cramped and the air is highly filtered and conditioned.

At the same time that we are in pandemic, so are the Chinese and Russian Navies. They're under the same man power crunch we are, and we have significantly more subs than they do, plus we're very, very good at ASW and keeping track of their boats. Them with ours? Not so much.

A good over view:

If they left port in January or February, they would be overrun by now regardless of air filters. While nuclear subs are roomier compared to conventional subs, it is still way too cramped for a contagion.

that 25% represents more submarines and missiles at sea than the Russians or Chinese have. At the same time: whatever trouble we are having manning a Navy - the Russians and Chinese have too.

USS Kidd (DDG-100) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the United States Navy. She is the third Navy ship named after Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who was on board Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was the first American flag officer to die in World War II. The ship is part of Destroyer Squadron 23 of Carrier Strike Group 9[citation needed] which is currently headed by the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.

17. USS Kidd reports more coronavirus cases in outbreak at sea

Apr 2020

WASHINGTON — The Everett-based destroyer USS Kidd has reported a worsening coronavirus outbreak on board and is returning to port, Navy officials said.

Navy officials said at least 33 members of the crew of the ship have now tested positive - up from 18 the day before. Officials said the Navy is evaluating the extent of the outbreak aboard the ship.

The Kidd is off the Pacific coast of Central America, where it has been operating as part of a U.S. counter-drug mission. The Navy said it has a crew of about 350. It is only the second Navy ship, among about 90 deployed around the world, to report a coronavirus outbreak at sea. The other is the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.

One sailor who displayed symptoms was flown off the Kidd on Thursday to a medical facility at San Antonio, where he tested positive for the virus.
