State and local governments brace for huge cuts as feds debate sending help for coronavirus-related

WASHINGTON Library employees and crossing guards were among the 380 city workers given furlough notices in Louisville, Ky., this month.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned last week that, without additional federal aid, the state will have to prepare for a 20% budget shortfall, which could hit schools, local governments and hospitals.
In Indiana, a state that President Donald Trump pointed to Wednesday as one that is doing phenomenally well, budget reserves could be exhausted by fall, according to one independent estimate. The state is distributing a record amount of unemployment assistance.
The latest coronavirus assistance package which Trump signed into law Friday includes nearly a half-trillion dollars to reload an assistance program for small businesses, send more funds to cash-strapped hospitals and expand coronavirus testing.

Given Trump's lies and incompetence in being able to articulate any sort of coherent strategy where he urges States to reopen, then criticizes them when they do, it just does not matter if State's continue to maintain any stay at home orders for me, because who can trust any declaration from Trump that COVID-19 us under control? Likewise, we can't stayed hold up forever waiting for the U.S. to develop a cohesive testing strategy when Trump is even turning on Republican governos like Hogan who get their own tests.
This is why the Nation is going to slide into a depression. Because even if Trump declares that COVID-19 has been taken care of, if people continue to die, folks are going to be afraid. Sports events, traveling and eating out? You can't really do that if you are afraid that you may lose your job or that you or your family might get sick regardless of whether any stay at home order has been lifted.

(12,712 posts)We have made it this far because we are apt at adaptation. It is not really survival of the strongest as has been said, but the survival of the most adaptable. We have done that all over the planet and under very diverse and even inhospitable environments and conditions.
We have that going for us as a species, especially if we don't allow fear and excess worry interfere with that.
A problem we have politically, and I am biased, is that Republicans are not good at or for the progress of adaptation. Even though they are no longer really "conservatives" the meaning of that word applies here in regards to their proclivities in general. My bias says they want a stronghold. Keep the old values and maybe even go back to the one's they nostalgically consider to be superior once upon a time. It's a fantasy in a way.
I think that having the GOP and their Trumper Thumper around is counterproductive in the sense I have indicated. They are not capable of dealing with this pandemic in a modern, complex world, so they flub along and only look for ways to exploit it to their benefit for the sake of their persistence and "stronghold" on things.

(3,997 posts)any complex or at least somewhat complex item, the supply chain is truly 'effed right now.
To wit, if I'm making say a fairly simple item that relies upon workers and manufacturers in another state or even down the street for parts, they also must coincidentally re-join the opening up of the economy or I don't get the parts I need. This story is now starting to play out. Just think of all the parts that go into making a car, truck, airplane, boat and far, far more where the spread-out suppliers are in states with stay at home orders. Heck even if said orders are lifted, they will be very uneven, not the least of which may be the worker's reluctance to even go back to work until it's reasonably safe.

(15,295 posts)You know all those local agreements to provide fire fighting and security support to federal installations like military bases and federal office buildings? Yeah, cut those too.
Attention Speaker Pelosi... NOT one more God Damned cent for FUCKING ANYTHING else until there are emergency funds passed, signed and IN THE HANDS OF STATE TREASURIES
It's time to see this as an existential threat to America. Hell, it's years past the time to acknowledge this shitshow as an existential threat.
Massive hurricane destroys Florida? Fuck 'em.
A dozen F5 tornadoes wipe Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi off the map? Fuck 'em
Because "FUCK 'EM" has been the ONLY fucking Retrumplican response to Democrats for over 40 years.
Remember when the case was proven beyond a doubt that this orange amphibian turd should be removed from office and prosecuted for federal crimes??? What was the Retrumplicans response? "FUCK 'EM"!
