Trump to 'brief the nation' Monday, White House announces hours after canceling afternoon briefing

About three hours after relaying that President Trump would not hold a scheduled coronavirus briefing on Monday, the White House announced he would “brief the nation” at a news conference.

“UPDATE: The White House has additional testing guidance and other announcements about safely opening up America again,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted. “President @realDonaldTrump will brief the nation during a news conference this evening.”

The Washington Post reported earlier Monday that the White House has been finalizing expanded guidelines to allow the phased reopening of schools and camps, child-care programs, certain workplaces, houses of worship, restaurants and mass transit.

The announcement of a 5 p.m. news conference in the Rose Garden was the latest in mixed signals from the White House about how often Trump plans to brief the press moving forward.

10. About the child-care centers - a friend of mine has closed hers for now.

It was technically allowed to be open, but she decided that was unsafe and closed it anyway (her father was an epidemiologist, among other things, so she sees these things through a better lens).

A few weeks ago, she ordered a ton of masks for everyone she knew, and she trudged around on foot to her clients' houses to deliver them (from a safe distance outside). One family came out and told her that they'd all had it. The week before she closed, the dad had been to Lake Tahoe with his brother (Tahoe had an outbreak, I guess) and came home as an unknowing carrier.

Had she stayed open, he would have returned to his regular task of picking up the kids (before he knew he was sick). So she would have been exposed, every other kid in the center would have been exposed, every parent would have been exposed, and everyone they came in contact with would have been exposed, all if she hadn't followed her instinct to close the center.

She's obviously informed since she came from a family who worked in public health, but she trusted her instincts, too. That one act probably prevented hundreds of people from being exposed. It's mind boggling.
