'So what?': Bolsonaro shrugs off Brazil's rising coronavirus death toll

Outrage at president’s response to news that more than 5,000 people have lost their lives

More than 5,000 Brazilians have lost their lives to the coronavirus – even more people than in China, if its official statistics are to be believed.

But on Tuesday night Brazil’s president shrugged off the news. “So what?” Jair Bolsonaro told reporters when asked about the record 474 deaths that day. “I’m sorry. What do you want me to do?”

Bolsonaro’s 11-word response – the latest in a series of remarks belittling the pandemic – sparked immediate fury. One newspaper, the Estado de Minas, stamped the president’s words on to a black front page beside Brazil’s death toll: 5,017.

“Bolsonaro isn’t just an awful politician and a bad president, he’s a despicable human being,” tweeted Marcelo Freixo, a leftwing opponent.

self centered disgusting examples of humanity, both of them. Granted being hammered by reports of deaths day in, day out, probably would cause one to go numb, but you are the leader of a nation, you are the focal point of all who look up to you for guidance and leadership.

Both of you so called leaders have failed miserably.

Trump failed with over a dozen instances of advance CV notice was given/provided and he ignored them.

He failed to protect America.

For those who still back rump...over 55K deaths and still accumulating should be enough evidence that rump screwed up, despite having rec'd over a dozen warnings or so.

This is a lot closer to home than Brazil. Congressional Republicans deliberately denied, blocked, refused, and delayed action to contain and then mitigate the pandemic their decisions knowingly unloosed in America. Their death toll is over 60,000 and will be much higher.

We don't know why. But the expertise of some in disease control and their related congressional decisions are documented beyond any doubt.
