University of Delaware says it still has no plans to release Biden's Senate papers, as pressure mounts

Updated 8:44 AM ET, Fri May 1, 2020

(CNN)The university that possesses a trove of Joe Biden's Senate papers told CNN on Thursday that there are still no plans to make them public now, as pressure grows on Biden's presidential campaign to release records that some say could potentially shed light on a sexual assault allegation against the presumptive Democratic nominee, which his campaign denies.

The University of Delaware said in a statement provided to CNN that the school is still "curating the collection" and the process is not expected to end until well into 2021. And even after the curation is finished, a spokeswoman for the school told CNN, the school would not release the papers until two years after Biden retires from public life.

"The University of Delaware received the Biden Senatorial Papers as a gift from Vice President Biden. We are currently curating the collection, a process that we estimate will carry at least into the spring of 2021," spokeswoman Andrea Boyle said in the statement. "As the curating process is not complete, the papers are not yet available to the public, and we are not able to identify what documents or files can be found within the collection."

Biden said in a statement on Friday morning that his papers at the university do not contain personnel files. But, he said, personnel files from the Senate during those days would be kept at the National Archives.

"I am requesting that the Secretary of the Senate ask the Archives to identify any record of the complaint she alleges she filed and make available to the press any such document. If there was ever any such complaint, the record will be there," Biden said.
Biden said in an interview with MSNBC Friday morning that the his papers at the University of Delaware will remain sealed because they could become political "fodder" during his presidential campaign.

"The idea that they would all be made public while I was running for office can be taken out of context," Biden said. He added that the documents would cover topics like meetings with foreign heads of state.......................

Wow.

You really think these people give 2 shits about the US or its people, its Constitution?

There should be no doubt who Reade is employed by & why.

How far will they go to gain access to Biden's papers?
(They're not really looking for an assault filing either).

Can anyone demand access to the papers?
AG Barr or another Trump hack?

This passive voice crap where things happen that no one named does gets right up my left nostril.

Remember always: They cannot effectively assail our political figures without our help. Well-meaning, good-hearted people who tend to the left need to learn not to allow their better natures to be taken advantage of by vicious scum on the right, and splinterest wreckers on the far left, who enlist them in their charges against figures of the center left, by exhorting them to 'be consistent' and telling them 'don't be hypocrites'. The proper response to attempts at this is a hearty "Fuck off! Nobody cares what a rancid piece of dogshit like you thinks!" Or words to that effect....

Only attack the enemy, the christo-fascist right.

Never, ever, attack people who are on your side.

If you want one quick reason why the right wing wields power well out of proportion to the popularity of its policies, it is that they adhere to this rule, and we on the left do not.

.................According to the University of Delaware, more than 1,850 boxes of archival records from Biden's more than three decades in the Senate were delivered to the school's library in June of 2012. The collection includes vast electronic records, the school has previously said, and will remain unavailable to the public while it is being processed. Boyle, the school's spokeswoman, told CNN the university had always planned to keep the Biden papers under seal until two years after he retired from public life.
These papers have emerged as central to the discussions about Reade's allegation against Biden.

The Washington Post editorial board, in calling for Biden to directly address Reade's allegation and release all relevant records, wrote Wednesday that the documents could contain confirmation of workplace complaints that Reade says she made while she worked at Biden's office.

"These could contain confirmation of any complaint Ms. Reade made, either through official congressional channels or to the three other employees she claims she informed not specifically of the alleged assault but more generally of harassment," the editorial board wrote. "They could also contain nothing of the sort. Insisting on an inventory doesn't mean one believes Ms. Reade or doesn't believe her. It signals only a desire for the public to know all that's able to be known, which ought to be in everyone's interest."
Dennis Toner, who was Biden's deputy chief of staff at the time and one of the people Reade said she had discussed her complaints with, told CNN in an interview on Thursday that he had no recollection of Reade or any conversation related to sexual harassment allegations.
"I clearly would remember if we -- that is, if Tara and myself -- had any kind of conversation regarding sexual harassment allegations, let alone something involving Sen. Biden. It would stick in my mind. It would be burned in my mind," Toner said. "I don't understand it."..................

Biden himself should address the Tara Reade allegations and release relevant records

TARA READE deserves to be heard, and voters deserve to hear her. They deserve to hear from Joe Biden, too.

The former vice president and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has yet to speak publicly about the allegation Ms. Reade has lodged against him: that when she was a member of his Senate staff in the 1990s, Mr. Biden pushed her against a wall and put his fingers up her skirt and then inside her. Mr. Biden’s campaign says “this never happened.” Contemporaneous accounts of Ms. Reade’s claim are counterweighted by the denials of her superiors at the time that she reported any misconduct, as well as inconsistencies in her retelling.

There are, at the moment, no clear conclusions. There may never be. But that is no excuse for not searching. One place to start is the records covering Mr. Biden’s 36-year Senate career, donated to the University of Delaware in 2012 and slated for release to the public two years after Mr. Biden “retires from public life.” These could contain confirmation of any complaint Ms. Reade made, either through official congressional channels or to the three other employees she claims she informed not specifically of the alleged assault but more generally of harassment. They could also contain nothing of the sort. Insisting on an inventory doesn’t mean one believes Ms. Reade or doesn’t believe her. It signals only a desire for the public to know all that’s able to be known, which ought to be in everyone’s interest.

There are 1,875 boxes and 415 gigabytes of electronic content, largely uncatalogued. Searching won’t be as easy as some might assume. But an inventory conducted with an eye toward releasing only relevant material could at least ascertain whether personnel records are part of this archive at all. Demands for the release of the entire trove invite a worthwhile debate about candidate disclosures, yet that’s not a battle that needs to be fought today. The narrower question is whether the public ought to have as much information as possible about an assault accusation against a presidential contender, and the answer is yes.

Another place to look is at the source: the candidate himself. Mr. Biden may have little to say besides what his campaign has already said — that he did not do this, and that this is not something he ever would do. Yet the way to signal he takes Ms. Reade’s case seriously, and the cases of women like her seriously, is to go before the media and the public ready to listen and to reply.

To lend even the least degree of support for these lies, even to intimate they deserve investigation, is to assist the christo-fascist right, and people need to get that through their heads. There is no room for mewling about 'both sides': our side is right and the other side is viciously wrong.

sells, sex sells. Their editorials may of course have valid points, but the profit motive should always be considered when you read things in the media.

It used to be news and investigative journalism was considered a public service, not expected to make a profit like it is now. So it was just plain BETTER then...

Look for Reade-type allegations to popup at will in foreign capitals, on Senate junkets ... this is classic trump of Biden's record.

The media is being used as a tool. This is an attempt to do what the National Enquirer no longer can do. This is classic trump. He who maufactures the dirt controls the agenda.

That said, let's see everything from the Republicans, too.

All secrecy sucks. Maybe the names of secret agents and details of highly classified military systems need to be kept secret, but ONLY WHILE IN USE.

Everybody should know everything that was done with even one taxpayer cent.

Just scan it all and dump it to the public, along with unsealing EVERY court case involving Trump.

Should be a law that no records may be sealed or redacted, and must be made publically available, for anyone running for any elected position.

Trump hasn't released any of his tax returns or business papers. Biden has already ordered all papers from the archives that could possibly relate to Reade to be released so that should be the end of the story. Everything else is a deflection for Trump away from the miserable job he has done as President. That and the reporting reflects the desire of the media to have the election be a horserace because that is best for their business and stockholders, who are their real audience.

Instead they focus on the University of Delaware and assume there is a nefarious reason for not releasing them now, without thinking about what kind of information is contained. For heaven’s sake.
