Bananas, filmed in Puerto Rico in 1970 and released in 1971, really secured Woody Allen's place as one of the great comic film-makers.

It's probably the best known of his "early, funny films," as he likes to call them. Lots of slapstick.

Look for the surly African-American lady playing J. Edgar Hoover at the treason trial scene at the end. A clever double entendre by Allen, given that (at the time, secretly) Hoover was part African-American and, of course, practically transgendered in bed.

It's no secret both attributes created immense self-hatred in Hoover - which probably accounted for his rabid hostility toward both people of color and gay men in general.

Hoover, coincidentally, died a year after Bananas was released.
