Mississippi governor says he changed his mind on reopening after increase in coronavirus cases

Source: CNN

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said today that he had planned to announce the reopening of certain businesses but decided against it after the state reported its largest increase new cases.

He said the number of cases increased after the state received new information on previous deaths and tests.

"This thing is not over, we are not out of the woods yet," he said. "We have to stay flexible."

Don't open up if your new case numbers are high.

No politician with a hint of a moral compass wants to be accused of trading people's lives for economic factors, or peoples' convenience.

Any relaxing of preventative rules is going to see an uptick in cases, guaranteed. Wave two. Don't start wave 2 if wave 1 is still happening.

Meanwhile, in my part of the world, South Australia, we have had ZERO new cases in the last 8 days.
The state and country are still in lockdown.
Pays to be cautious.

Even if businesses here go back to normal, I'd staying in self imposed isolation for another week, just in case there is a wave 2 here.

at least a month after they open things. My husband and I make only essential trips outside our home.

And our governor, JB Pritzker, is doing an excellent job. I still don't want to run around pretending things are "back to normal." There is no normal.

As might be predicted, with temps in the mid 80s and abundant sunshine, people flocked to the beaches here in NW Florida. Lots of pent up energy and besides, they got cheated out of spring break, right?

So our grand experiment continues. We’ll see how our Covid-19 numbers look in a couple of weeks. Might I add, my husband and I did not join the throngs of people eager to soak up some rays while lolling on a sandy beach towel. We are both 71 and would kind of like to make it to 72 (or higher). So we kept our old asses at home.

Gov. Reeves: Spike in Mississippi coronavirus cases delays more reopenings
Clarion Ledger Published 2:01 p.m. CT May 1, 2020 | Updated 2:58 p.m. CT May 1, 2020

The state Legislature reconvened on Friday afternoon, to try to assert its control over spending $1.25 billion in federal CARES Act money for the state's coronavirus expenses. Reeves has said he has authority to spend the funds, but lawmakers say such spending is constitutionally the Legislature's responsibility.

Reeves in his briefing criticized the Legislature's move as a political power grab that could delay relief spending getting to those who need it "over petty political differences."

So when a state elects a Republican official, they need to know how many people have to die before their governor or senator starts doing his damn job and takes responsibility for a pandemic, natural disaster, racial violence, or some other event threatening the public.
