The U.S.' coronavirus recovery is way behind Europe's
Source: Axios
Other countries even some hit hard by the coronavirus are beating back their outbreaks more successfully than the U.S.
Why it matters: The number of new cases every day is holding steady in the U.S., but it's not going down a key benchmark many other countries achieved before loosening their lockdowns and social distancing measures.
In some of Europes hardest-hit countries, case counts seemed to skyrocket uncontrollably even amid some of the worlds strictest lockdowns.
* Italy and Spain followed a similar pattern. New cases climbed over about a month from under 100 per day to terrifying peaks of roughly 8,000 per day in Spain and 6,000 per day in Italy.
* The fall was nearly as sharp. Within two weeks of the peak, the rates of daily recorded cases had been halved. Theyve continued to fall since.
* Other hard-hit countries like France have followed a similar trajectory, though the U.K. which now has the highest official death toll in Europe has yet to do so.
Americas daily rate climbed faster and higher (due in part to its larger population), but appears to have peaked at around 30,000 new cases per day in the first week of April.
* But rather than falling, the rate stagnated. Outside of New York (which has bent its curve) the rate is actually continuing to climb.
* The U.S. continues to record several times as many new cases each day as any other country has at any time during the pandemic.

We could naturally cull some herd stupidity if the people violating social distance orders were the ones catching it, but the virus doesn't discriminate. America has people wilfully spreading it to others.

(9,958 posts)We have around 40,000 deaths every year from gun violence and another 40,000 from automobile accidents. Add the more than 67,000 (2018) opioid deaths, and we have nearly 150,000 people who die every year from largely preventable causes. And we have a population that has fought almost every government effort to regulate the causes of those deaths. Auto deaths decreased significantly with regulation, but some people refused to use seat belts or follow speed limits that they claimed impinged on their freedoms.
The gun nuts and gun lobby has meant next to no regulation of guns to protect lives, and even the deaths of school children have become acceptable sacrifices for the freedom to own and use any gun you want, including those whose sole purpose is to kill.
Drug use in this country is higher than in most developed countries, ranking in the top ten of the most drug-addicted countries in the world, in spite of the billions of dollars spent in the failed war on drugs. Yet Americans accept drug deaths just as they do other deaths, as if they are just an expected part of life here. I believe thats why so many people are pushing to reopen the economy. They know that death awaits many of their fellow Americans, but death has become a normal part of life here and it just doesnt matter when compared with earning money and living life as if there is nothing to worry about.
After every mass murder, especially of children, people are horrified for a few days and then the news cycle moves on as if that was just an aberration and we need not be concerned about it any longer. The American psyche does not embrace personal sacrifice for long, if at all. Death from Covid-19 has become just one more risk, no worse than getting on the highway and having a drunk driver smash into you.
I may be painting a more dismal picture than warranted, and I dont believe this picture fits most here, but I am constantly dismayed by the millions who believe hate radio and Fox News and I think they have been conditioned to accept the decline of this country because its not their faultits always the fault of liberals and Democrats and women and minorities.
