Coronavirus found in men's semen

Source: CNN

The new coronavirus can persist in men's semen even after they have begun to recover, a finding that raises the possibility the virus could be sexually transmitted, Chinese researchers said Thursday.

A team at Shangqiu Municipal Hospital tested 38 male patients treated there at the height of the pandemic in China, in January and February.

About 16% of them had evidence of the coronavirus in their semen, the team reported in the journal JAMA Network Open. About a quarter of them were in the acute stage of infection and nearly 9% of them were recovering, the team reported.

"We found that SARS-CoV-2 can be present in the semen of patients with COVID-19, and SARS-CoV-2 may still be detected in the semen of recovering patients," Diangeng Li of Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing and colleagues wrote.

... will love this report.

There were reports by at least mid-April that the novel Coronavirus attaches to protein receptors of the lungs, heart and intestines. Those receptors are also found in testicles, but not ovaries.

Small sample size, no peer review, qualified language means this research is inconclusive, and any labeling of COVID as sexually transmissible is speculative and irresponsible.

Like the question, "Who was the first scientist who got the idea of checking sperm for the virus? Who gave him a hand in doing the research? What result did they expect to come from the tests? And of course, how did they collect the samples?"

NOT The Onion, Testicles may make men more vulnerable to coronavirus
"Testicles may make men more vulnerable to coronavirus: study"

"The coronavirus could linger in the testicles, making men prone to longer, more severe cases of the illness, according to a new study."

"...the virus attaches itself to a protein that occurs in high levels in the testicles. This protein, known as angiotensin converting enzyme 2, or ACE2, is present in the lungs, the gastrointestinal tract and the heart in addition to large quantities in the testicles."

"These observations demonstrate that male subjects have delayed viral clearance,” the authors wrote, adding that the testicles may be serving as “reservoirs” for the virus."

"The study may offer an explanation for reports out of Italy, South Korea and New York City that men are dying at higher rates from the virus."

... or in the process of recovering. The jury is still out on all of this. How do we know that "recovered" victims can't have a spontaneous relapse? How do we know that they don't become carriers for the rest of their lives? At what point do they stop infecting other people? There are so any questions that still need to be answered.
