Guns can be banned at Michigan Capitol, says AG Dana Nessel

Source: Michigan Live

LANSING, MI -- Attorney General Dana Nessel said Friday a ban on guns at the Capitol could be enacted by the Michigan State Capitol Commission, which is slated to discuss firearms next week.

In a letter sent to the Michigan State Capitol Commission, Nessel said the commission would be within its rights to ban guns on the Capitol grounds for the protection of those both inside and outside of the building. She also issued a statement on her decision in a press release issued by her office.

“With exceptions to those tasked with protecting our Capitol, the only way to assure that a violent episode does not occur is to act in concert with the many other state legislatures around the nation that have banned firearms in their capital facilities," Nessel said.

"The employees at our Capitol and members of the public who visit are entitled to all the same protections as one would have at a courthouse and many other public venues. Public safety demands no less, and a lawmaker’s desire to speak freely without fear of violence requires action be taken.”

and the state government enacted them. It was politically expedient, now they reap the harvest. It is just more of the cost of electing Republicans.

You are right, firearms should not be allowed in state buildings or on state properties. Don't hold your breath waiting for the laws to be repealed. The governor may or may not be able to successfully ban them by executive actions, but it will be a fight in the courts if not in the streets.

If it's a law, I'd doubt a commission could overrule it.

Sounds like lack of a law.

Crude dichotomy:
What's not forbidden is allowed.
What's not allowed is forbidden.

The first is the least restrictive. The second says you can only do what your keepers permit.

We see those arguments quite often when discussing the Constitution.

It depends on which viewpoint favors the speaker's position.

A private property owner can ban firearms on his or her premises.

Almost all of the guns you are seeing out in public are being legally carried.....blame the state, blame the lawmakers. When states open up open carry, you can bet that the very last people you would want to see with guns are the ones that will be proudly carrying. These folks take great pleasure in frighting and intimidating people. It is all part of Making America Great Again.
