Elon Musk claims Tesla will leave California, sue over coronavirus order
Source: East Bay Times
Tesla CEO Elon Musk lashed out at Alameda County public health officials Saturday on Twitter, claiming his car company will leave California and sue the county over coronavirus lockdown orders that have shuttered its Fremont factory.
Tesla is filing a lawsuit against Alameda County immediately. The unelected & ignorant Interim Health Officer of Alameda is acting contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense! Musk tweeted Saturday morning, referring to Health Officer Dr. Erica Pan.
He continued in another tweet, Frankly, this is the final straw. Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately. If we even retain Fremont manufacturing activity at all, it will be dependen (sic) on how Tesla is treated in the future. Tesla is the last carmaker left in CA.
Musk, who has 33.9 million Twitter followers, also encouraged Tesla shareholders to file a class-action lawsuit against Alameda County, and called its actions irrational & detached from reality. He continued to belittle Pan, writing that Tesla knows far more about what needs to be done to be safe through our Tesla China factory experience than an (unelected) interim junior official in Alameda County.

Dr. Pan seems to be a doing a lot better than your engineering, Elon!

"Irrational & detached from reality". Such an interesting turn of phrase he chose. Sounds like a feature of the description for megalomania:
To the extent that people are pathologically narcissistic, the person with NPD can be a self-absorbed control freak who passes blame and is intolerant of contradictory views and opinions; is apathetic towards the emotional, mental, and psychological needs of other people; and is indifferent to the negative effects of his or her behaviors, whilst insisting that people should see him or her as an ideal person.[7] To protect their fragile self-concept, narcissists use psycho-social strategies, such as the tendency to devalue and derogate and to insult and blame other people, usually with anger and hostility towards people's responses to the narcissist's anti-social conduct.[11] Because their fragile egos are hypersensitive to perceived criticism or defeat, people with NPD are prone to feelings of shame, humiliation, and worthlessness over minor incidents of daily life and imagined, personal slights,[10] and usually mask such feelings from people, either by way of feigned humility, or by socially isolating themselves, or by responding with outbursts of rage and defiance, or by seeking revenge.[7][8] The merging of the inflated self-concept and the actual self is evident in the grandiosity component of narcissistic personality disorder; also inherent to that psychological process are the defense mechanisms of idealization and devaluation and of denial.[12][

(35,296 posts)This graph shows the total number of cases. If the curve "flattens" on that graph, it means no more cases are reported. That's not what they meant when they said "flatten the curve".
The original "flatten the curve" showed a y-axis mislabeled "number of cases". More accurately it would read "number of active" cases--meaning new cases minus recovered cases. To flatten the curve was to reduce the future active cases below a threshold--the hospital's carrying capacity.
We did that. No place has exceeded it. Sometimes that was due to additional capacity that was put in place in March. But a lot of the extra capacity wasn't ever used.
If you have a graph that shows the number of new cases reported each day, then a flattened curve would mean a horizontal line, slope = 0. In a few weeks there'd be equilibrium--# of recovered = # new cases.
On this kind of graph, a constant number of new cases would show up as a straight line. What the slope would be, dunno. But if the line's sloped, the number of active cases will go all constant.
Using # of cases is a bad proxy, though. # hospitalizations is better, but it misleads people less and it's harder to come by, so reporters avoid it even when they have access to it. Not doomy-and-gloomy, sensationalistic. In short, not catastrophe porn with a side helping of politics. We can get by with # of deaths per day, but as those decline we need something else to stoke those typically already numb from daily outrage, and since testing's ramped up the number of new or active cases will do. (Although it should cause serious cognitive dissonance sufficient to produce not just a headache but intermittent black outs that # of new cases increases but death rates fall or hold relatively constant, while we're not better at treating it than a month ago.)

(click on the Daily tabs to see the flattened curve)
but in other surrounding counties the daily number of cases are going down, indicating that they are farther along in dealing with the epidemic. I would still be concerned about opening up a car manufacturing plant in Alameda County before the daily cases at least show a sign of decreasing.

(12,792 posts)Nevada estimates a tax base of $1.9 billion over 20 years.[47] After sticky negotiations,[60] Tesla chose the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRIC) as the location of the Gigafactory mainly due to speed[56] and a State of Nevada incentive package. Other location reasons were rail access, direct sale ability,[52][58] and low air humidity[61] to ensure less than 300 ppm humidity in production.[62] The TRIC owners gave the first 1,000 acres to Tesla for free.[63]

(38,414 posts)The people who wear masks, are very aware of environment and air problems. That is why they buy a Tesla.."clean air"
But Elon Musk does not care about clean air for his employees. And this is getting wide publicity..All over the country. Yes, DU is part of that publicity.. So if we read it, others read it..(East Bay Times)..and some (?) will say that Musk "doesn't care about his employees:..... The shut down temporarily protects them, and the air they breath and "California Air" without Covid in the air. ..
And Musk will move to show California who is "right" and knows what to do.. Musk wants the factory open NOW
And people who care about "clean air" will show Musk who the real boss is....So, if there is a 25 percent decrease in Tesla sales, who wins? And what does that say about Musk and what the company stands for?..The shut down is to protect workers from what???
A virus in the air! But the factory must stay open..according to Elon Musk.. Is that smart? Not in my opinion.
The publicity about this could hurt in ways that Musk doesn't know. Also, it is a play to overcome California rules and laws...Musk wants the State of California to open NOW..
That is not good for publicity either..
