Couple arrested for hate crime in Brooklyn, allegedly blaming spread of COVID-19 on Jews: Police

Source: ABC News

A couple was arrested after they allegedly shouted anti-Semitic slurs at three Hasidic men in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and tried to rip off their face-coverings while blaming them for the spread of the coronavirus, the NYPD said.

Paulo and Clelia Pinho, 35 and 46 respectively, of Queens, were charged with hate crimes for the incident that took place around 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the corner of Bedford Avenue and Ross Street, the police said. Paul Pinho allegedly called 911 to report a large crowd gathering, according to police.

He and his wife allegedly got out of their car, accosted the men, shouting out slurs and attempted to take away their face coverings, according to the NYPD.

"You’re the reason why we’re getting sick,” one of the suspects allegedly said, according to police.

1. One possible source of their name? Jewish.

One possible source of their name? Jewish.

Irony of ethnic hatred and ethnic names.

Their name is Pinho… possibly Italian or Portuguese.
One possible source of their name? Jewish way back when?

Pinho Surname User-submission:

Its origin is probably from the Jews. To protect themselves from being persecuted many changed their surnames to the names of the trees and animals, for example Pinho (pine), Coelho (rabbit) and Nogueira (walnut tree).

3. When the next Atty General gets to work

I want them to push for more federal hate crime prosecution. If states fail to prosecute. The feds should always pick it up. There should be a hate crime czar watching the states. Enough already with this bullshit.
Its 2020. Keep your damn hatred to yourself. Let the hate continue to rot your black heart, but if you cross the line and put your hands on someone, then you need to be prosecuted and the punishment should be severe.

5. de Blasio didn't help with his earlier tweet

Mentioning the Jewish community by name when grumbling about people not observing social distancing was putting fuel on the fire.

Critics accused de Blasio of singling out the Orthodox Jewish community for censure when others have violated social distancing rules as well.

World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said Wednesday he was recommending that the group formally censure de Blasio for his response to the funeral.

“I agree with the Mayor that social distancing is vitally important — and last night’s gathering was not appropriate,” Lauder said in a statement. “But to blame the entire Jewish community is the type of stereotyping that is dangerous and unacceptable at any time, and particularly pernicious while the world is gripped in fear and the worst among us are looking for scapegoats.”

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted that generalizing about the whole Jewish population of New York City “is outrageous especially when so many are scapegoating Jews.”

And he didn't have the intestinal fortitude to say that he was wrong to single out the group like that but instead doubled down when confronted.
