American Travelers Are About to Be Pariahs in This New World

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Daily Beast

One thing is sure: Gone are the days of the American abroad, at least for those hoping to summer in Europe this year. The new models on how to reopen European travel do not have room for the American tourist for the foreseeable future.

Trump has managed to turn the United States into one of the sh*thole countries he so crassly called African Countries. Americans can't even visit Europe now because of his imbecile incompetence in managing the corona virus. Worst. President. EVER!

"We have heard of the "Ugly American", that citizen that travels abroad and disrespects the people and culture of other countries, exhibiting arrogance and superiority toward his guests.

But, those folks were not the rule. They were the exception.

However, nowadays, the world sees America thru the people we elect to lead us. It is as if America went into the dog pound and picked out the ugliest, most vicious dog they could find for a pet. They could see what they were getting but they chose him anyway.

We are no longer viewed as the occasional ignorant American, we are viewed as an ignorant nation."

One of my favorite countries to visit is Ecuador. Guayaquil has only 250 Covid 19 deaths. But the Government has recently explained that that is no doubt due to the fact that they can't get a hold of tests right now. Deaths is Guayaquil are actually up over 30,000 from last year. Bodies in the streets. Impromptu crematoria popping up on sidewalks.

We are quarantined until June 14. Possibly to July 12.

Cases up to 600+, now 285. Cluster at the largest city outward. Not in our Province. Only 3 cases in our Province. All recovered.

No hoarding. No meat shortages. Business mostly open. Wash hands at every stop. Bank makes you step into sanitizer.

One at a time in bank. Line outside 6 ft apart. No one protesting. Losing many businesses that may never reopen.

We have so many cases, and still rising, that most countries don’t want us. As a retiree, I looked forward to my annual travels to Europe. I see none in the foreseeable future.

But that loss for me is nothing compared with the thousands who are dying here from this nasty disease, and I cannot stop wondering how many might have been saved if we had a competent leader who took the danger seriously instead of trying for weeks to dismiss it as a hoax. President Obama would have made a huge difference in our response to the virus.

Europeans simply cannot understand how we could have elected Trump. They’re just mystified that such a despicable person could have been selected as our president. For that matter, so am I.

But I have found the Europeans I’ve encountered in my travels to be unfailingly delightful. I would not worry so much about the reception I would receive as I would about the virus. I think it will be haunting all of us for a long time.

My wife and I usually take a month in New England over in the USA every summer. They have to let me back in because I'm a US citizen, but she is a German citizen, and while the current DHS/CBP rules on their website say we can travel to the USA with immediate family members, does that mean it's still OK if said family members are not US citizens?

I guess the only way to find out is to get on a plane, and hope they don't tell us to turn around and go back where we came from.

IF you can get through to a US consulate, sure, they might be able to answer that. Unfortunately you can't get through. write and they will tell you they aren't answering any inquiries other than emergencies. Call, and you get a recording saying the same thing. You can try to make an appointment online, but then they may or may not give you one, and then you ave to travel to the embassy in Berlin or one of the major consulates (Frankfurt or München). I've met Trump's consul general here in Düsseldorf. She's a political appointee, and a scarecrow in a Nebraska corn field has a higher IQ.

You can luck out or strike out. The first time I tried, I got stuck with a couple of women who had no clue how to deal with an American. They were used to saying no to Russian economic "refugees" who show up here wanting to go on welfare without looking for a job or even learning German (Americans aren't the only ones who are convinced that everything in Germany is free). An American, not looking for a job or a handout was more than they could handle. Luckily, their task was transferred to a more competent bureau, who got me my residence permit within two months. Some Germans still think I'm nuts. Once, when I was coming in from Atlanta, the German border policewoman stared at my residency permit and asked why in the world I would want THAT? She said that if she could move in the opposite direction, she would do it in a heartbeat. She must know someone with a 3000 square foot apartment in San Francisco overlooking the bay or something.

Keep in mind--I got my residence permit that quickly because I offered them EVERYTHING they wanted to hear: married to a German citizen for decades, had a steady job for decades, had my own US health insurance, had no outstanding debts, spoke fluent German, was willing to pay the high (around 50%) taxes and get nothing in return--no health insurance, no pension, no NOTHING. I also could show them a Dallas bank account that convinced them I would not be asking them for welfare any time in the next ten years if I lost my job. My wife does have a pension, but the €850 a month she gets from the German government REALLY doesn't go far. A retired girlfriend of hers is on a much more generous disability pension, and she has to watch every cent so as not to be eating stale bread for the last five days of every month.

I did ask about a German health insurance, but I was quoted €30,000 a year--a little beyond what I could justify after being relieved of 50% of my earnings first. Not only that, but the German government wants to tax part of my income that is already taxed in the USA at 39.6%. After the USA takes 39.6% and the Germans their 50%, that would leave me with about 10%. The German accountants have been battling the German government over that for the last 8 years, but the German bureaucrats (avoid them like the plague if you can!) don't want to admit they are clueless--or, worse, wrong. There IS a double-taxation treaty, but they understand it less than I do.

A certain group of people seems to delight in perpetuating the myth that everything is free here in Germany. Nothing could be further from the truth, and the relatively high cost of living here hits lower-income people pretty hard. The number of panhandlers at German train stations can be shocking at times. "Spare any change?" is not limited to North America.

If you want to emigrate here, it CAN be done, but make sure you know what you're in for, and what to expect. Fluency in German and a waiting job with a German employer that is not time-limited would be a good start when you apply. "Ein Bier, bitte" won't cut it with them. When you can use "Streichholzschächtelchen" in a sentence without stuttering, THEN you come apply, not before.

An Italian once drew up a cartoon entitled "perché io non imparo mai il tedesco (why I'll never learn German)." It showed a face with a runny nose, five times the same face, vertically. Four times it said, after the words Italiano, Inglese, Francese and Spagnuolo, "sinusitis." After the last face, it said "tedesco (German)" and the same word in German: Nasennebenhöllenentzündung."

I've never gotten the sense that people associate individuals with their country's government. I certainly don't with visitors to the US. The vast majority of mature people are not so rude as to mention politics with a visitor.

Having said that, I would probably put off any trip involving mass transit (e.g. air travel) in the fall, strictly because of the virus (unless things change dramatically). I really don't want to catch it.

Edit for typo.

I live in Ontario, my Premier Rob Ford is adamant that the border remains closed until covid-19 in the USA has a cure and a vaccine. My Prime Minister Trudeau also feels this way.

My friends and family hate the lock down and social isolation. We wear masks when we have to go out, we social distance. Anyone who does not we speak up and report them.

We value all our lives. We all have health care. Our governments, Federal and Provincial, provide financial assistance if we need it.

We don't want Americans coming up and wiping out all our hard efforts to keep covid-19 in control with their covid-19 germs. We don't believe it is a hoax. We believe it can kill you.

You can listen to our Canadian musicians , The Guess Who song - American Woman.

And as we say in Canada - Sorry.
