Four Northeast states will let beaches open by Memorial Day weekend.

Source: New York Times

New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware have jointly agreed to allow beaches and lakeshores to open next Friday for Memorial Day weekend, but at reduced capacity and with restrictions, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said on Friday.

But local governments will be allowed to make their own decisions about whether beaches reopen in their jurisdictions, including in New York City, where Mayor Bill de Blasio said that city-run beaches would not open.

“That’s not in the cards right now,” Mr. de Blasio said at a news briefing.

Mr. Cuomo’s announcement of the agreement came a day after the governors of New Jersey and Delaware, Philip D. Murphy and John Carney, said their states would allow beaches to reopen by Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of those areas’ busy seasons.

Our numbers of infected/dead will go up, I know. Then we'll just shut down again. What's the damn point?

People need to be outside and doing things. And it can be done safely. Park rangers need to limit the number of people who can enter, and require that groups distance themselves from other groups.

Just because some college kids crammed onto Florida beaches last February and helped spread the virus, doesn't mean the rest of us can't get out and enjoy nature safely and responsibly.

Being outside is the safest place to be. And realize when a photo is taken looking down the beach it makes it look like everyone is on top of each other. Even Pre-Covid people usually set up with as much space as possible between each other. I never recall being within 10 feet of strangers. Not everyday is spring break in Florida with stupid kids partying it up. I spoke with someone who went to one of our west coast beaches last week. The seaweed was bad as it can be. Beach goers were using it to ‘draw’ off their designated zone of isolation.

Social distancing does not mean staying locked in the house.

I’m way more worried about bars reopening.
