Despite the pandemic and high unemployment, Republicans in Kansas ended this year's legislative session by blocking Medicaid expansion.
On Thursday, Kansas Republicans blocked a final effort by Democratic lawmakers to expand Medicaid during the 2020 state legislative session, the Wichita Eagle reported.
The failure to pass the expansion leaves 130,000 residents who would have been eligible for it without access to the health care program.
Democratic state Sen. Dinah Sykes attempted to force a vote on the Medicaid expansion, but Republicans used a procedural tactic to stop it. Both chambers of Kansas' legislature have adjourned until early in 2021.
Throughout the session, Republican lawmakers tied the expansion of Medicaid to an anti-abortion constitutional amendment, refusing to pass one without the other. The "Value Them Both" amendment was designed, in the words of the Kansas House resolution, "to amend the bill of rights of the constitution of the state of Kansas by adding a new section thereto stating that there is no constitutional right to abortion, and reserving to the people the ability to regulate abortion through the elected members of the legislature of the state of Kansas."

So these right to lifers in Kansas legislature, are really a death cult, if they couldn't get there abortion bill items then in there mind just screw everyone, in fact screw 130,000 human beings. I guess they didn't read that this pandemic is also infecting children right along with adults, so the "Value Them Both" amendment, really is, a they don't value life at all.................and the citizens of that state keep voting these republicans into power..............amazing.......

(36,775 posts)Republicans don't mind killing living babies.
Republicans want to deny adequate health care to ordinary Americans.
Republicans want Americans to go back to work in dangerous conditions.
Republicans want corporations to have legal immunity for workers who get sick and die doing dangerous jobs.
Republicans are against requiring safe working conditions for ordinary Americans.
Republicans are OK with killing off 2-3% of children who go back to school early.
All for the economy first.

(34,105 posts)in the election. We have their names. We all know who they are and why they are doing this. They are hiding it behind abortion, their arguments make no sense. They simply do not want to help out the people who need Medicaid. Brownback spent a lot of time conditioning these feelings. I see it and hear it but I do not believe most of the people here feel this is a good thing and I believe enough of them are beginning to see how they are being used with the "give me this and you can have that" especially when they are both medical issues. Who do we crush, women or poor people? What a choice. At least where I am I see some movement to not accept this choice. Then again I saw comments from all over the state on opinions on Pompeo this morning and I lost all my will to live.

(88 posts)So the Repigs want to force an anti-abortion amendment on the people of Kansas? Let them. Clearly they have no clue about the US Constitution. No state can amend its Constitution to make unconstitutional something that the Supreme Court has determined is Constitutional, so passing an amendment to the state constitution is, in this instance, a meaningless exercise.
So the Dems should have said "yes", let the Repigs pass both pieces of legislation and then sued in Federal court to have the amendment thrown out as a violation of Roe v Wade. Medicaid expansion is done and the legislature is in recess until early next year, allowing time for the Dems to tell the people of Kansas that their Repig "Right to Life" legislators were perfectly happy to let them die just so the Lege could get a meaningless amendment on the books and just in time for state legislative elections..
