Family's autopsy says George Floyd was asphyxiated
Source: Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Attorneys representing George Floyd's family released findings of their own autopsy that said the man was asphyxiated while now-fired officer Derek Chauvin had his kneeing pinning Floyd's neck. The results directly challenged preliminary results from the examination by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office that he was not strangled, but died from other factors, including being restrained.
"George died because he needed a breath, a breath of air," family attorney Ben Crump said during a news conference Monday afternoon. "For George Floyd, the ambulance was his hearse."
Crump added that Floyd "was living, breathing, talking until we see those officers restrain him while he's face down in handcuffs with Officer Chauvin having his knee lodged into his neck for over 8 minutes, almost 9 minutes, and the other officer having both his knees lodged into his back. And the doctors will explain the significance of that, as to the cause and manner of death."
The attorney said that all the evidence to date points to Floyd having died at the scene and not later that night, when he was at HCMC.

(24,291 posts)You can see the damaged tissue. What you can't tell, maybe, is if the heart attack was caused by the asphyxiation. Same for a stroke.

(51,557 posts)Victims of strangulation showed a strong alveolar hemorrhage, with alveolar collapse and overinsufflation, associated with bronchiolar dilatation. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11394747/
Specifically with strangulation, there are the following findings:
Features:
Petechiac of sclerae (white part of eye) & conjunctivae (cover sclerae); present ~ 90% of the time.
Hyoid bone fracture.
Thyroid cartilage fracture.
Hemorrhage in strap muscles of the neck.Patterned ovoid contusions (from the fingers).

I bet he had bleeding in the whites of his eyes.

(3,491 posts)it doesn't make sense that a medical examiner could be that incompetent unless they're in on the fix.

(5,933 posts)They were kneeling with their full weight on George Floyd's chest and abdomen. They're out of sight, behind the police car, in the most infamous video, but they're clearly seen in video taken from across the street.
Having 400+pounds pressing down on the victim's chest and abdomen surely contributed to his inability to breath. That and a knee pressing full-force on his neck.

(8,914 posts)Security footage, witness videos and official documents show how a series of actions by officers turned fatal. (This video contains scenes of graphic violence.)
This also shows the opposite side of the vehicle that we can't see in the original video.

I think everyone should see this video. (If you can get past the graphic violence)

(51,557 posts)Dr. Michael Baden, renowned medical examiner, on George Floyd's: The autopsy shows that Floyd has no underlying health problem that contributed to his death.
"He was in good health," Baden said. "The cause of death is asphyxia compression of the neck and back."
"What we found is consistent with what people saw," Baden said. "There is no other health issue that could cause or contribute to the death. Police have this false impression that if you can talk, you can breathe. Thats not true." https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/06/01/george-floyd-independent-autopsy-findings-released-monday/5307185002/
And Chauvin had his body weight on Floyd's neck. It only takes 4-11 lbs of pressure to block the veins in a person's neck:
4 pounds of pressure required to occlude jugular veins (preventing venous drainage of head) and 5 - 11 pounds to occlude carotid arteriesLoss of consciousness occurs in 10 - 15 seconds; death within 3 - 5 minutesMay see facial and conjunctival petechiae at autopsy.

(23,340 posts)... a lack of blood flow through carotid artery starved the brain.
Asphyxiation, if confirmed by county and state examiners, would point to three officers as immediate cause, the three that were kneeling on him. Cutting off carotid would point to one officer as the cause.
Of course, all four should be charged, for committing the crime or abetting by standing there.

(2,273 posts)Just heard of the details. Positional asphyxiation which did not allow the diaphragm to operate because of weight upon the back.
This was the cause of death in crucifixion. Those 4 cops crucified Mr.Floyd in broad daylight. They feared no repercussions. They feared no "I am Spartacus" moment. They had no fear because they knew that they had gotten away with similar behavior in the past . They had no fear because the I was fearful defense will only need to resonate with one juror.
This was a public execution....over a non violent crime.

How do they reach a conclusion?
A third autopsy?
Right now, both sides have a result they prefer.
This is going to be analyzed to the smallest detail.
