Bishop of DC church outraged by Trump visit: 'I just can't believe what my eyes have seen'

Source: CNN

(CNN)Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Dioscese of Washington said Monday evening that she is "outraged" after President Donald Trump visited her church "without permission."

Her comments came after the President walked from the White House to St. John's Episcopal Church, a house of worship used by American presidents for more than a century. Peaceful protesters just outside the White House gates were dispersed with tear gas, flash grenades and rubber bullets. It was all, apparently, so Trump could visit the church.

"I am outraged. The President did not pray when he came to St. John's, nor as you just articulated, did he acknowledge the agony of our country right now," Budde told CNN's Anderson Cooper on "AC360."

"And in particular, that of the people of color in our nation, who wonder if anyone ever -- anyone in public power will ever acknowledge their sacred words. And who are rightfully demanding an end to 400 years of systemic racism and white supremacy in our country. And I just want the world to know, that we in the diocese of Washington, following Jesus and his way of love ... we distance ourselves from the incendiary language of this President. We follow someone who lived a life of nonviolence and sacrificial love."

Hubby's sister is an Episcopal priest, she performed our nonreligious ceremony with her Bishop's permission, I'm very fond of this denomination. This makes me so happy. Many religious groups have played a major role in freedom and justice movements around the world throughout history. Now is the time to step up and I am thrilled to see it happening. We need solidarity from all directions. (And yeah, I'm an atheist who thinks we have souls and weeps on the rare occasion I'm in a church of any kind. It's complicated)

That might be why it feels complicated.

Agnostics aren't afraid to accept ambiguity, which is how your post reads to me.

for 40 years, along with humanist. I rarely have to pick one most days, but when I'm opining about religion I feel like I oughtta disclose something, lol.

I suppose agnostic is the most accurate.

There was a sign near him that set the hours in which parking was permitted and that outside those hours, towing was enforced. Any cars towed would be hauled off by the District and taken to far, far Southwest.

Anyone who thinks all government is inefficient should see a DC tow truck in operation. Towing in the District is carried out with brutal efficiency.

Intent to use Christianity not for good, but for evil, not for peace, but for violence. He said in April 2016 he would make "ghettoes" safe again. To state the obvious we are in a very perilous place. These tactics of fear and control could be used for the election, to cancel or alter voting. Full chaos is a great enemy to democracy.

The way you can tell is the red ribbon book marks are hanging down from the bottom of the book. I am sure however, that trump did not know the purpose of the ribbons since he does not read the Bible nor does he ever mark a passage in any book to go back later and reread it for any reason whatsoever. As Valerie Jarrett and others said last night the Bible is not a prop.

Though Willie Geist just referred to the upside down, this about 7:19am, and there are photos of him holding it in boths hands and looking down at the Bible.

So there are varying versions of what he did in front of the Church.

When Trump said "open the churches" she said "We will when it is safe to do so". Right now the diocese is still doing online worship.

He said neither he nor anyone at the church was told Trump planned a visit. He was out with the protestors and completely blindsided by the photo op.
