Good Riddance: The Frank Rizzo Statue Has Been Removed

Source: Philadelphia Magazine

There hasn’t been much good news coming in overnight lately. But we finally have some to report: the Frank Rizzo statue is gone.

That’s right. When you went to bed last night, the Frank Rizzo statue still loomed large over the plaza outside of the Municipal Services Building. But now, it doesn’t.

The statue’s exact whereabouts are currently unknown. Also unknown is what’s going to happen to it next. We’d suggest tossing it in the river but, you know, the river’s already polluted enough.

Philly may be the birthplace of American democracy, but it's had its bad moments. If you like a little flash-bang go ogle up the "room to move" standoff. You think we can't bomb our own citizens? Waco had its moral underpinnings, Room to Move went the smoke out route.

Mayor Kenney is true blue to his city. You gotta respect the guy. He has not issued a tone deaf sentence in public life. He's like a throwback to the great reforms of the Progressive Era when good city government, the distinctly American civic organizations - Civic Federation, Urban League (I suspect), city manager government - grabbed hold of cities from machine politics and what were essentially neighborhood fascists led by powerful families. Sound like the Trump White House took notes? Have I stepped on enough toes here? As usual I'm playing fast and loose with memories pulled from readings, so if I sound a bit like nostalgia write me a plenary indulgence.

I suspect things in Philly are not going to improve. A lot of grocery stores have boarded up due to the unrest. I don’t know how people in the city are going to do without the ability to feed themselves. Hope this situation starts to settle down or it’s going to be a long summer.
