Trump demands journalists correct stories on the use of tear gas. According to the CDC, it was tear gas.

June 2, 2020 at 10:09 p.m. CDT

President Trump’s reelection campaign sent a message out to news organizations Tuesday night, demanding a correction to articles that described security forces’ use of tear gas to disperse demonstrators outside the White House on Monday, to allow Trump to cross the street to pose for photos at a church.

The U.S. Park Police had earlier released a statement defending that effort, saying that their use of chemical agents against the crowd came in response to violence from protesters, and that it involved “pepper balls” and “smoke canisters.” The statement went on to assert that “no tear gas was used” in the Lafayette Square incident.

“We now know through the U.S. Park Police that neither they, nor any of their law enforcement partners, used tear gas to quell rising violence,” Tim Murtaugh, the Trump 2020 campaign’s communications director said in a statement Tuesday night. “Every news organization which reported the tear gas lie should immediately correct or retract its erroneous reporting,”

The truth boils down to an exercise in semantics.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: “Riot control agents (sometimes referred to as “tear gas”) are chemical compounds that temporarily make people unable to function by causing irritation to the eyes, mouth, throat, lungs, and skin.”.....................................

Another lie from the WH.

It was tear gas which are several different compounds. Despite its ubiquity across the globe and in United States, tear gas is a chemical agent banned in warfare per the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993, which set forth agreements signed by nearly every nation in the world — including the United States. The catch, however, is that while it’s illegal in war, it’s legal in domestic riot control. That means Turkey got to use it on its protesters last 2013. That meant Bahrain got to the do the same. And in Ferguson, cops were likewise blasting residents protesting the police for the killing of an unarmed teen named Michael Brown.

Apparently pepper balls have a caveat as they are targeted and aimed at a specific suspect rather than masses. War type tear gases are made more potent and thus fully banned in warfare.

100% peaceful protesters were tear gassed and then "herded" out of the way by officers on horseback. It looked like a wild west "cattle drive". No excuse for what happened! Too bad the tRump administration has NO foresight when it comes to their decisions. I heard what a "wise" man BIll Barr was when he was being confirmed. He must have caught a case of stupid from tRump?

The sooner that all of us see and understand that the rich, powerful, venal and corrupt who are behind institutional racism, sexism, human trafficking, classism, ageism and all of the other disrespectful behaviors don't regard anyone of the masses as anything but something to use, the sooner we can make the social changes we need.

Maybe all of the gun humpers, bullies, racists and others know that truth on some level, and in a desperate bid to avoid acting against their masters, impose their insecurities on others.

He isn't about the truth on this, he wants to be the victim.whoever advised him this would be good is a real dumbass , and trump is even worse for going along with it and even dumber . He isn't smart enough to handle simple things , so doing this isn't a surprise. Every day he remains in office more Republicans will lose being re-elected in Nov. .

...... with gas masks. The point is the law prohibits the U.S. military from using chemical weapons on U.S. Citizens.

The reason they want the reporting stories changed is that it is likely against the law and possibly a war crime.

This appears to have been done with direct orders from Barr to clear the crowds so Trump could get an UNNECESSARY photo-op.

One final point I'm no forensic scientist but my guess is there is enough residual chemical evidence on protestor cloths and carried signs, water bottles, backpacks, etc, to PROVE what chemical agents were released into the crowd.

Freedom of the press in the United States is legally protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Near v. Minnesota
The 1931 U.S. Supreme Court decision Near v. Minnesota recognized freedom of the press by roundly rejecting prior restraints on publication, a principle that applied to free speech generally in subsequent jurisprudence. The court ruled that a Minnesota law targeting publishers of malicious or scandalous newspapers violated the First Amendment (as applied through the Fourteenth Amendment).

Branzburg v. Hayes
Freedom of the press was described in 1972's Branzburg v. Hayes as "a fundamental personal right", not confined to newspapers and periodicals.[3] In Lovell v. City of Griffin (1938),[4] Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes defined the press as "every sort of publication which affords a vehicle of information and opinion."[5] This right has been extended to newspapers, books, plays, movies, and video games.[6]

Tear gas is a generalized term. The different types have different specific names.
But, many such dispersal chemicals have one thing in common. They irritate the eyes. Hence the general term tear gas.
