Trump admin to Supreme Court: Let adoption agencies reject LGBTQ families

In the latest example of the Trump administration seeking to enable legal discrimination against LGBTQ people, the Justice Department is calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to allow religious-affiliated adoption agencies to refuse child placement into LGBTQ homes.

In a 35-page brief, U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco and other Justice Department attorneys maintain the City of Philadelphia has “impermissibly discriminated against religious exercise” under the First Amendment by requiring Catholic Social Services to abide by a contract requiring LGBTQ non-discrimination practices in child placement. (1)

“Governmental action tainted by hostility to religion fails strict scrutiny almost by definition,” the brief says. “This court has never recognized even a legitimate governmental interest — much less a compelling one — that justifies hostility toward religion.” ... The U.S. government isn’t a party to the case, known as Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, so the brief is completely voluntary. In justifying the brief before the Supreme Court, the filing makes the case the Justice Department has a compelling interest to intervene.

“This case concerns the application of the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to the City of Philadelphia’s termination of a contract allowing Catholic Social Services to help place children in the City with foster parents, on the basis of Catholic Social Services’ unwillingness to endorse same-sex couples as foster parents,” the brief says. “The United States has a substantial interest in the preservation of the free exercise of religion. It also has a substantial interest in the enforcement of rules prohibiting discrimination by government contractors.”

The case came about after the City of Philadelphia learned in March 2018 that Catholic Social Services, which the city had hired to provide foster care services to children in child welfare, was refusing to license same-sex couples despite a contract prohibiting these agencies from engaging in anti-LGBTQ discrimination.

Religious exercise ends at the Church door. That's why all the parishoners try to run you over when they tear out of the parking lot.

These stupid courts and churches keep trying to entend themselves into everything people do. They're in your bedroom, your wallet, on your wall, in your car. Where does it end?

tossed out of the country.

Give him 24 hours to leave and if he doesn't go, put him in a cage at the US - Mexico border.

Give him a shiny thin warming blanket and a bucket for refuse.

Then take his one person cage and attach it to the top of the border fence.

9. If 'Christian' families would adopt, there would be no children needing adoption by LGBTQ families.

How many needy children can we count on you and your church members to adopt/foster?

That comment implies that somehow gay families are inferior to straight families. This is not so!

The only thing that matters in life is whatever love you transmit to another. This basic human need is inherent in you no matter what sexual persuasion that you are.

There are plenty of straight families that suck in comparison to a gay family who gives out plenty of love and attention to those children that they are raising as their own. There should be no other criteria. Families should be picked according to who are best at the time the child comes along needing to be loved.

Keeping a child from being loved by someone just because that person doesn't fit some arcane, moralistic piece of bullshit fostered by a religious group, or our government, has to be just a piece of evil.

There is no other reason for any of us to exist. How much you love is the only thing that counts. And, I don't mean physical love, I mean emotional love. Real love. Care, concern, where the hell have you been all night kind of love. Eat your peas and do your homework stuff.

I appreciate what you were trying to say, but you gotta be more careful.
