GOPs Murkowski says shes struggling with supporting Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski acknowledged Thursday that shes struggling over whether she can support President Donald Trump given his handling of the virus and race crises shaking the United States.
Murkowski, long a critic of the presidents, told reporters in Washington that she was thankful for the example set the night before by retired Gen. James Mattis. Trumps former secretary of defense, who resigned in 2018, broke his silence Wednesday with a blunt rebuke of the presidents leadership.
She called it necessary and overdue.
Perhaps were getting to the point where we can be more honest with the concerns that we might hold internally, and have the courage of our own convictions to speak up, Murkowski said. Asked whether she can still support Trump, she replied, I am struggling with it. I have struggled with it for a long time. But she said shed continue to try to work with his administration.
Murkowskis remarks were an acknowledgment of the ongoing choice Republicans are forced to make about whether, and for how long, to support Trump when his words and actions so often conflict with their values and goals. Trump has responded to the police killing of George Floyd by calling for more law and order, rather than addressing at any length the racial injustice that lies at the heart of the unrest. ...................................

Murkowski made the admission after praising former defense secretary James Mattiss criticism of Trumps performance.
We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership, Mattis told the Atlantic on Wednesday. Murkowski said Mattiss remarks were necessary and long overdue.
I felt like perhaps we are getting to a point where we can be more honest with the concerns we might hold internally, Murkowski said.
When asked whether she still supported Trump, the senator replied, I am struggling with it. I have struggled with it for a long time.
Questions about who Im going to vote for, or not going to vote for, I think are distracting at the moment, she added.
Senator Mitt Romney (R., Utah), a frequent Trump critic, also praised Mattiss comments without explicitly endorsing them.
[Mattis] expressed his opinion and it was very powerful and it was a stunning letter, Romney told the Huffington Post. Hes an American patriot with extraordinary service and sacrifice and great judgement.
Murkowskis statements come at the same time that Joe Biden has seen a continuing rise in support. A Monmouth poll released on Wednesday recorded 52 percent support for Biden in the general election nationwide compared with 41 percent support for Trump. Bidens 11-point lead is up from the 3-point lead he held in the same poll in March, when the former vice president had all but defeated Senator Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) in the Democratic primary race.

I just don't understand those like her and Collins, and even a few other republican Senators who bash trump but wind up sticking with him.

This is something you're still "struggling" with? Seriously???????
You haven't seen enough by now?
You haven't heard enough by now?
And you haven't noticed the ripple effect of all this by now?
You haven't noticed the "down ballot" of all this - that's now playing out in many many forms?
What - you just waking up or something?
How is it that, FIVE months til the next election, you're still "struggling" with what the right thing to do is, here? What the right thing to do WAS - at the very least by the end of year one of this nightmare. But we've been through almost a full four years of this by now. And you're still "struggling" with what keeps smacking you in the face?

(9,426 posts)"If Moscow Mitch does not send cash for my projects in Alaska so I can get re-elected, then I will continue with this line of statements" This is just how Murkowski and Collins acted before the laughable "impeachment" farce. They both got large allowances from Mrs. Moscow Mitch. Don't believe this at all. Hey, Murkowski, actions speak louder than words.

(14,173 posts)I think there are many in the Republican party who are, deep down, closer to Conservative than the neo-Republican party of Trump. But they are going along to get along. They are using Trump's popularity, with the base, as a means to consolidate power for themselves and they see a day, like a lot of naive Democrats, that the country will go back to where they envision a fiscally restrained, Christian, family first, militarily strong, capitalist nation. But they are playing with fire. What they have enleashed may be too hard to put back into the bottle.
This is how Hitler rose to power:
https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/the-nazi-rise-to-power
On January 30, 1933, President Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor of Germany. Hitler was not appointed chancellor as the result of an electoral victory with a popular mandate, but instead as the result of a constitutionally questionable deal among a small group of conservative German politicians who had given up on parliamentary rule. They hoped to use Hitler's popularity with the masses to buttress a return to conservative authoritarian rule, perhaps even a monarchy. Within two years, however, Hitler and the Nazis outmaneuvered Germany's conservative politicians to consolidate a radical Nazi dictatorship completely subordinate to Hitler's personal will.
We see how, even though Trump "won" by the EC rules, he lost the popular vote, and won through a lot of voter suppression, welcomed foreign interference, and probably voting machine manipulation. This mirrors to some degree the German version of a "group of conservative German politicians who had given up on parliamentary rule." and thought they could "use Hitler's popularity with the masses to buttress a return to conservative authoritarian rule". Much like many Republicans have given up on the idea of democracy, if it means losing.
But in the end, Hitler had destroyed enough institutions and brainwashed enough followers that he didn't need them anymore. I now fear what America will become if Trump steals another term. Past enablers like Murkowski, and Collins, if they dare to move to the Never Trumpers, will join Romney on the enemy list. And have no power anymore to change anything.
