Portland To Redirect Millions In Police Funding, Dissolve Gun Violence Team

Source: Oregon Public Broadcasting

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler announced changes to the city’s police bureau at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

“For too long, the city of Portland has underinvested in communities of color, specifically our Black community,” Wheeler said during a press conference. I should have acted with greater urgency to these demands. My privilege shielded me from difficult and uncomfortable truths on our history and society,” he said.

Wheeler announced a plan to redirect over $7 million from the Portland Police Bureau and $5 million from other city funds to invest in communities of color. He did not say specifically where that money would be invested.

Additionally, the mayor announced plans to dissolve the Gun Violence Reduction Task Force, banning the use of chokeholds and changing policies around consent in traffic stop searches.

And he says the cops have been brutal, especially at night, when they attack anyone approaching what has become known as “the sacred fence”, a barrier surrounding the govt buildings, I believe.

I did see some footage on kgw8 that showed some overhead video of the fence and you could see a shower of water bottles and other projectiles flying over the fence towards the police. Aldo I would suggest that charging that fence night after night is not productive.
