Gov. Newsom walks tightrope on defunding California police at Oakland meeting on racism
Source: East Bay Times
The city of Oakland marked the latest stop on Gov. Gavin Newsoms listening tour as he travels the state to meet with community leaders to discuss racism and systemic injustices.
Newsom visited Miss Ollies with Oakland African-American Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Cathy Adams and also met with a group of leaders that included Akonadi Foundation President Lateefah Simon for a conversation on policing and criminal justice reforms.
The meetings come in the midst of a civil-rights protests in response to the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd last month.

If youre calling for eliminating police, no, Newsom said. If youre talking about reimagining and taking the opportunity to look at the responsibility and role that we place on law enforcement to be social workers, mental health workers, get involved in disputes where a badge and a gun are unnecessary, then I think absolutely this is an opportunity to look at all of the above.

(95,244 posts)Reform in a department which votes a wretch like Kroll to be its union head is not possible. The people employed as police in Minneapolis have openly declared themselves to be fine with racism and brutality. Dismiss them all and start over with new personnel.
De Blasio has done nothing to rein in brutal behavior by New York police, and botched the response to the plague in the early going. One suspects these are not your reasons for the distaste you expressed.
Ms. Omar has gone off the rails a bit, but I confess to retaining a certain fondness for her.

Every August, adults help their teenagers prepare the start of the fall semester of school. Give them a wad of cash or a credit card to purchase clothes, shoes and school supplies. Can you trust most teens to do this or do they come back with designer sneakers, jewelry, CD's, multiple piercings and tattoos! Police funds should monitored to be used for the benefit to both the police and the community they serve.
