Iowa Poll: Donald Trump leads Joe Biden by 1 point in tight contest for president
Source: Des Moines Register
Four years after Republican Donald Trump decisively won Iowa and the presidency, the state appears to be a toss-up as he seeks re-election this November, a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows.
Trump carried Iowa by 9 percentage points in his 2016 contest against Democrat Hillary Clinton. But today, the Registers Iowa Poll shows the president leading former Vice President Joe Biden by just 1 point 44% to 43%.
The poll of 674 likely voters was conducted June 7-10 by Selzer & Co. of Des Moines. Its margin of error is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
The results which come in the midst of a pandemic and widespread civil unrest are among a wave of polling that indicates an increasingly unstable electoral map for the president. States like Iowa that were expected to be safe territory for him after clear wins in 2016 now appear to be battlegrounds in 2020.

(19,190 posts)Don't forget those gays. If Trump doesn't get to put some tougher judges on the Supreme Court these gays are going to think they're equal or something.

(19,190 posts)If the judges Trump did pick weren't crazy enough to vote against equal rights for gays, do you realize how crazy they'll have to be if he gets to choose any more? They'll have to be drain bamaged, or worse, be just like Trump!

(34,857 posts)He won Iowa by nine. People who voted for him in 2016 knew who he was and still voted for him. This isn't Michigan or Pennsylvania (or even Florida) where he won narrowly. He won this and Ohio fairly comfortably. So, for him to lose eight-points is significant, even if he's still leading.

(5,586 posts)points above the publicly available number. Biden can certainly win without Iowa, but we all need to work our asses off.

(34,857 posts)It won't really be close.
Unless you're just talking Iowa and not the other states. But there's only one swing state where Biden leads by more than 7 (Michigan) and he leads by 7.3. Every other swing state has Biden leading by fewer than five-points (or barely trailing).

(1,602 posts)Iowa has been trending conservative for a long time, and likely was in Trump's list of SAFE states. If Iowa is within the MOE, then it means that he's going to have to spend more time and money there than he would have preferred to do. Georgia, Texas, and Arizona are all beginning to tip towards Biden, which means he's in deep trouble and will be hard-pressed to actually hit

(169 posts)The state had been similar to Wisconsin in that it was a swing state that would tilt blue in most election years. After 2 consecutive Democratic Governors, the state became a casualty to the Tea Party movement. Tom Harkin retiring without a strong replacement didn't help matters either as Democrats lost that seat to Joni Ernst. With the current trend in the polls slowly trending to Biden and the Senate race starting to favor Theresa Greenfield, it's looking Democrats are finally starting to make inroads in that state again.
